ATLANTA - Georgia State spoiled UT Arlington's attempt to sweep a trip through Georgia, upending the Mavericks 3-2 on Saturday night at GSU Sports Arena.

The Mavericks (11-13, 5-4) appeared to be on the way to a big road win in the fifth set as they opened with a 7-1 lead. However, Georgia State closed the gap and rallied for the five-set victory to end a four-match losing streak to UTA. The Mavs conclude a three-game road trip on Tuesday at in-state rival Texas State.

Similarly to its 3-1 win over Georgia Southern on Friday, the Mavericks started the match slow. Georgia State controlled much of the opening set on the way to a 25-22 win. UTA stole momentum away to take the next two sets for the second consecutive night.

Kaitlyn Granger's fourth kill of the match helped UTA pad its lead to 18-12 midway through the second and the Mavs pushed ahead to take it 25-19. The teams battled back and forth in the third but it was 16-13 in favor of the Mavs. Georgia State appeared to run away with the third with a nine-point run, but the Mavs were able to steady themselves late and a seven-point spurt helped UTA to a 25-23 advantage.

UTA had the fourth in its hands with a lead going to 22-21. GSU's defense forced the Mavs into several errors and a big block at the line sent the Panthers to a two-point win and a victory in the fifth.

PLAYERS OF THE MATCH
Qiana Canete was one of two Mavericks to register 13 kills, joining Kaitlyn Granger. Canete completed the double-double with 20 digs. … Taylor Murata had 22 digs.

MILESTONE WATCH
Canete inched closer to becoming the 11th player in UTA history to be a member of the 1,000-kill and 1,000-dig club. With 27 kills over the weekend, she is just eight short of her 1,000th kill.

UP NEXT
UTA takes a trip down I-35 to take on in-state rival Texas State on Tuesday night. The Mavericks fell to the Bobcats 3-1 in UTA's Dig Pink match in its last home match on Oct. 13.

QUOTABLE
UTA coach Diane Seymour on the team's play
"It was inconsistent play by us. It was typical to how we are lately. We were struggling to put points together and didn't play well the entire match. We have to clean up our play."

Seymour on the quick turnaround
"We have to focus on being more consistent. We wont be able to get very hard in the gym with the quick turnaround but in order to compete with them we will have to be more consistent."
