Final Stats

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Qiana Canete etched her name into UTA history in UT Arlington Volleyball's 3-1 loss at Texas State on Tuesday.

Needing eight kills to become only the 11th player in program history to record 1,000 digs and 1,000 kills, Canete achieved the feat in dramatic fashion. The junior tallied nine kills on the evening with the final three coming late in a closely contested third set with the Mavs trailing 2-0 overall.

All four sets were close affairs with all ending 25-23. The Mavs fell behind early in and trailed most of Set 1 before a big kill by Kylie Jedlicka tied it up at 19. The points would then go back and forth before the Bobcats eventually scored the final two points to take the set.

Set 2 was the complete opposite for UTA, taking the lead early and controlling much of the set. The Bobcats stormed back late to tie it 19 and eventually win it on a service ace, 25-23.

The Mavs were on top early in the third set. After Texas State broke an 8-8 tie, they took a commanding lead finding themselves up 22-17 before the Mavs went on an 8-1 run to win the set and force a fourth set.

Set four was tightly contested with the Mavs jumping out in front early. The Bobcats came from behind to tie things up at 16 and then take nine of the next 16 points to take the set and match.

With the loss the Mavs move to 11-13 overall and 5-5 in Sun Belt play, while the Bobcats improve to 15-9 and 9-1.

Players of the Match
Bursting onto the scene as of late, Jedlicka had a huge night, recording career highs in kills (15) and blocks (6). Zhanelle Geathers also had a strong night with 12 kills and 5 blocks.

Cassidy Wheeler recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 38 assists and 16 digs. Claire Schwettmann had a solid performance defensively with a career-high 21 digs.

Milestone Watch
With her 15 digs, Taylor Murata now has 432 on the season, placing her fifth on the freshman digs list. She is 24 shy of Morgan Rogers (2004) for fourth.

After reaching her 1,000th career kill tonight, Canete needs seven kills to tied Tara Frantz (2008-11) for 16th on the UTA career kills list and 20 digs to tie Kisha Tucker (1997-00) for 17th on the career digs list.

Wheeler is closing in on eighth in career assists, needing 93 to catch Raegan Daniel (2007-10).

Up next
The Mavs wrap up their regular season home schedule this weekend hosting ULM Friday and Louisiana Saturday. Both matches are scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start. Saturday's match is Senior Night with Cassidy Wheeler and Kaitlyn Granger being honored during the match.

Quotables
Head Coach Diane Seymour on the effort tonight
"we played much better tonight. We were much more consistant and executed game plan very well other than a couple of plays. I am very happy with how we played tonight."

Seymour on the play of Jedlicka
"We inserted her into the starting lineup a few matches back and I think its been a good thing for us. I really think its helped Zhanelle as well, putting her back in the middle. I was excited to see Kylie to lead us in kills and blocks tonight. She did a good job."

Seymour on Canete
"It's a big honor for her to be only the 11th player in school history and she's still got another year to play. She does a lot of things for us. She carries a big load both offensively and defensively. She had a big night."

Seymour on Vickers performance
"Libbie had a fabulous night. She had a career-high in digs and I was really happy to see her have the night she did tonight."

Seymour on the upcoming weekend
"It's senior night on Saturday and we would love send Cassidy and Kaitlyn Granger off with a win. We want to continue playing the way we did tonight. I was really proud of our fight tonight."
