Postgame Notes

  • UT Arlington is 1-0 on the season, heading into Monday's road game at the University of Minnesota (1-0).
  • Texas Southern is 0-1 on the season. The Wildcats play tomorrow (Nov. 13) at Delaware State (1 p.m. CT).
  • Texas Southern never led in the game.
  • UT Arlington defense limited Texas Southern forward Derrick Griffin to 3 rebounds, well below his 11.1 average last season as the SWAC Player of the Year.
  • The first four baskets of the game over 3:19 were all 3-pointers. Drew Charles drained a 3-pointer :55 seconds into the game from the right wing. Jalen Jones connected on consecutive 3-pointers within :30 seconds. Faith Pope completed a traditional 3-point play after getting fouled on a layup to give UTA a 12-3 lead.
  • 12 different players saw action against Texas Southern, each making their first appearance in the first half. DJ Bryant, Erkam Kiris and Link Kabadyundi made their first appearance as Mavericks.
  • Junior forward Kevin Hervey made his first appearance after suffering a major knee injury last season. He missed the final 19 games of the season. Hervey entered the game at the 15:05 mark of the first half. His first basket came less than three minutes later.
  • Hervey finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds in just 21 minutes off the bench.
  • Hervey finished with his 10th career double-double. He has played 48 career games at UTA after playing just 16 last year as a sophomore.
  • Jalen Jones finished with 23 points. He has now scored in double figures in four straight games and six of his last seven.
  • Faith Pope earned his first career start against Texas Southern. His point total odf 9 points tonight was just one point shy of his career high.
  • Monday's game at Minnesota will be the first of three road contests in five days: Monday at Minnesota, Wednesday at Florida Gulf Coast, Friday at Arkansas. The Mavericks return home Monday, Nov. 21 to face St. Francis (Ill.).
  • Kaelon Wilson went a perfect 8-for-8 from the field, tying the program record for field goal percentage in a game. His 8 field goals was the third-highest total among those tied for the record. He scored 19 points.
  • UTA's homecoming game attendance of 4,532 was the ninth highest since the opening of College Park Center.
