PALM DESERT, California - Aaron Guanlao's climb up the leaderboard of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate mirrored that of UT Arlington as a team as the tournament came to a close Sunday.
Guanlao came in with an even-par 72 at the Classic Club to finish in seventh place in the individual standings. The sophomore was tied for 37th after Friday's opening round and moved into a tie for sixth after Saturday's 67.
"I was hitting my irons well which led to some birdie putts and my putting was really clicking over the past couple days, as I was able to make many mid-to-long range putts," Guanlao said.
"I was really excited to shoot my lowest collegiate score the second round after I didn't get off to a good start, but overall I finished really well, which has boosted my confidence. And is super nice playing nice at the first tournament of the season to get some momentum going moving forward."
The Mavericks tied for ninth as a team, a jump of six places after being tied for 15th in the 20-team event two days ago. UTA's three-round total was plus-31 895 (306-297-292). The Mavs improved in each round after the opener.
"We had a solid start to the spring season," UTA coach Stuart Deane said. "The team started very slow and nerves were showing. Once we knocked some rust off, we improved every day and the confidence went up.
"Aaron played really nice. He was rounding into some form before we came away and once he settled into the tournament, we saw what we were expecting. After today's play the consensus was that all the strength and conditioning work is paying off, as down the last 9 the team was still able to finish strong."
Zach Galliford also fired an even-round Sunday to tie for 26th. Josh Radcliff (T71), Jake Greenspoon (T88) and Harrison Moore (T110) also competed for UTA.
The Mavericks return to action in the Louisiana Classics beginning Feb. 28 in Lafayette, LA.
