ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington men's tennis battled to its second consecutive win after sweeping Marquette 4-0 on Monday at the UTA Tennis Center.
The Mavericks improved to 14-7 overall and 10-1 on their home court. Marquette fell to 8-7 after its second consecutive loss, dropping a decision to SMU a day earlier.
"I thought we played really aggressive from the beginning against a very fast team that is used to playing fast, usually indoors," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "We did a great job in taking the initiative and being proactive. We played clean across the board."
UTA earned the doubles point with wins from Mauricio Del Rio and Carlos Arbiza (6-3) as well as Mario Muniesa and Guanarteme Nuez (6-2).
"Doubles is big," Benitez said. "There is a lot of intensity during doubles, a lot of fast play. We try to think of it as a boost of confidence anytime you win the doubles point."
The Mavs were able to use the momentum gained from the opening point to pick up three two-set wins in singles to clinch the win.
Nuez earned the first singles point with a quick 6-2, 6-4 decision, shortly joined thereafter by Daniel Armengol's 6-1, 6-3 win.
The final point came on the heels of Del Rio's tiebreak in the first set as he closed the second with a 6-2 decision.
UTA continues its three-match homestand on March 30 against No. 44 SMU.
