ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington's doubles pairing of Daniel Armengol and Jhonathan Gonzalez is ranked No. 61 on the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Division I Rankings, released Tuesday. The national recognition is the first for the Mavericks this season.
"Daniel and Jhonathan are playing very consistent doubles," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "They're a team that plays aggressive when the moment asks. They're very versatile and have a wide range of skills on the court.
"We are very proud of them. I'm sure they're going to continue climbing in the rankings, and it's just another great accomplishment for the men's team."
The duo is a team-best 10-1 and currently riding a six-match win streak. Armengol and Gonzalez have gathered nine wins in the No. 2 position and one when playing at No. 3. The juniors were the only Mavericks to earn a doubles victory (6-2) over No. 74 Florida Gulf Coast on Feb. 20.
Armengol and Gonzalez won their most recent match 6-3 against Wichita State Sunday at the UTA Tennis Center. The decision helped UTA clinch the doubles point in route of defeating the Shockers for the first time since 2005. The loss also ended Wichita State's eight-match losing streak.
Armengol is a perfect 10-0 in singles play, eight coming in the No. 5 position. No. 1 Gonzalez is 6-8 after capturing his last three matches.
The Mavericks are 10-5 with eight consecutive wins in Arlington. UTA travels to California next for the Sacramento State Tournament beginning Friday.
