BSB: Eagles rally to take two from Mavs

April 16, 2016

ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington Mavericks dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday, 6-0 and 10-6, to Georgia Southern at Clay Gould Ballpark.

Georgia Southern (21-15, 9-9 SBC) got a complete game shutout from sophomore Chase Cohen in Game 1, and then rallied for 10 runs in the final four frames in the nightcap to secure the series from the Mavs (20-17, 6-9 SBC).

"It was good to have Joel (Kuhnel) back out there, but we didn't play well enough to win," coach Darin Thomas said after the game. "Give them credit, they out-competed us all day long. No question about it."

"We kicked it around a little bit and it seemed like everything that got things started for them was a hit-by-pitch or an error, but give them credit because they squared a lot of balls up. We kind of shut it down after it was 5-0 and did not pitch it well out of the pen at all, which we have been doing. We'll hang in there, but they (Georgia Southern ) did what they needed to do and took it to us today."

UTA will return to action when it closes out an eight-game homestand on Tuesday against Dallas Baptist.

Game 1 - Box Score
Georgia Southern 6, UT Arlington 0
One night after UTA's Kadon Simmons tossed a three-hit shutout against the Eagles, Georgia Southern's Chase Cohen turned in a two-hit shutout of his own.

The right-hander struck out seven and walked only two on the day, holding the Mavs without a hit for the final five frames to move to 4-2 on the season.

Jake Wilcox, making his third start in two weeks allowed just four runs in 6.0 innings with three strikeouts before the Eagles got two more off the Maverick pen.

Wilcox matched zeros with Cohen for the first three frames before Ryan Cleveland put Georgia Southern ahead with his first of two home runs on the day to lead off the top of the fourth. The score stayed at 1-0 until an inning later when Cleveland struck again, this time opening up the game with a three-run bomb with two outs.

From there Cohen allowed just three base runners and only one as far as second base.

Brady Cox reached base twice in the game, drawing a walk to go with a double while Christian Hollie picked up the other UTA hit in the game.

Game 2 - Box Score
Georgia Southern 10, UT Arlington 6
UTA spotted itself a 5-0 lead with a five-run second inning, but the Eagle bats came alive in the final five innings to outscore the Mavs 10-1 down the stretch and take the series.

Darien McLemore had two hits and three RBI in the game, while Noah Vaughan and Jerame Littell each had two hits apiece also. That looked to be enough for Joel lKuhnel who was outstanding in his first appearance since March 19, shutting out the Georgia Southern offense for 5.0 frames with three punchouts.

UTA chased Eagle starter Brian Eichhorn from the mound in the second inning, but a rested Georgia Southern bullpen did its job in allowing just one run in the final 7.1 innings of play. Reliever Chris Brown got the win, his third of the year, with 1.2 shutout innings of late relief while Landon Hughes carried the bulk of the load with one run allowed in 4.0 innings of work.

Daniel James took the loss for the Mavericks, allowing the eventual winning run to reach base to lead off the ninth after getting the final three outs of the eighth to keep the game knotted at 6-6.

Hollie, Littell and Josh Minjarez all had RBI in the five-run second for the Mavs before McLemore delivered his first big two-out hit of the game with a two-run double into the left-field corner to cap the inning.

From there, however, both offenses were silent until the top of the sixth when the Eagles took advantage of a pair of Maverick errors to score a pair of unearned runs off of reliever Jacob Moreland. An inning later Geogia Southern knotted things up with three more runs, getting back-to-back homers from Hunter Thomas and CJ Brazil to cut the lead to one before CJ Ballard tied things at 5-5 on a fielder's choice.

But the Mavs immediately answered that rally in the bottom of the inning with Littell leading off with a double before McLemore put UTA back in front 6-5 with a two-out single to score him.

The Eagles, however, came right back and tied things at 6-6 in the top of the eighth on an RBI ground out by Evan McDonald and then worked out of a bases-loaded situation in the UTA half of the inning to have things still tied going to the ninth.

There it only took the Eagles three batters to take the lead with Ballard driving in the go-ahead run with a one-out single. One batter later Jordan Wren delivered the big blow of the game when he sent a two-run homer over the right-field wall.

Georgia Southern would add one more in the inning and the Mavs would get a pair of hits in the bottom of the inning, but Brown still managed to close the door to end things.
