ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington men's tennis earned its best season since 2002 after sweeping Midwestern State 4-0 on Saturday at UTA Tennis Center.
The Mavericks finished the regular season with a 15-10 record as they head into the Sun Belt Championship tournament next week. The 15 wins tie the second most in program history, coming two short of the all-time record set in 2001. Ending his home career, Carlos Arbiza picked up a win in his final match as he clinched the win in No. 5 singles.
UTA made quick work of the Mustangs, ranked No. 11 in Division II, to earn the doubles point. The Mavs went up 5-0 in both No. 2 and No. 3 singles before the Mustangs could close the gap. Daniel Armengol and Jhonathan Gonzalez finished it off with a 6-1 win, while Guanarteme Nuez and Mario Muniesa won 6-2.
The momentum carried into singles. Gonzalez earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at position two, Nuez won 6-2, 6-3 and Arbiza closed things off with a 6-3, 6-2 result.
The Mavs will await their positioning in next week's Sun Belt Conference Championship. The first round begins on Thursday, April 21 with the seeds seven through 10 playing on the opening day.
