NEW ORLEANS - UT Arlington men's tennis advanced to the Sun Belt Championship semifinals after sweeping Louisiana, 4-0, at the UNO Tennis Center on Friday.
The Mavericks, improving to 16-10 and just one win away from tying its all-time wins record, ended a four-match losing streak to the Ragin' Cajuns and advanced to their second semifinal in three years of being in the conference. UTA faces top-seeded Georgia State - No. 58 in the latest ITA/Oracle Collegiate Rankings - on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the New Orleans Pepsi Tennis Center.
UTA picked up the doubles point after Daniel Armengol and Jhonathan Gonzalez earned a quick 6-1 win at the top spot. The second point came with more difficulty as Mario Muniesa and Guanarteme Nuez edged out a 6-4 win at No. 3.
Muniesa carried over the momentum from his doubles win to take a two-set win in No. 3 singles, while Mauricio Del Rio brought UTA to within just one point of advancing with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6.
The team's captain helped clinch the spot in the semifinals. After falling in the first set 6-3, senior Carlos Arbiza rallied to a 6-3 win in Set 2 and throttled through Set 3 6-1.
