ARLINGTON, Texas - Jacob Moreland tossed 5.0 shutout innings of relief, but ULM's Brayden Bouchey kept the UT Arlington bats quiet after a five-hour rain delay as the Warhawks clinched the three-game series with a 3-2 win on Saturday at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Mavericks managed just four hits in the second game of the three-game series as they fell to 17-15 overall and 4-7 in Sun Belt play. ULM, pushing all of its runs across in a three-run fourth, went to 13-18 overall and 4-7 in conference, overcoming four errors.
"We're scuffling, but we have to give their pitcher some credit," coach Darin Thomas said after the game. "Ten strikeouts and no walks is good. We didn't take many good swings off of him tonight, and situationally we had some chances where all we had to do was put the ball in play and score some runs. But we didn't get it done and a big part of that was him, so give him credit."
Quintin Rohrbaugh was the lone Maverick to register a multi-hit game as the junior finished 2-for-4 at the dish, tallying a triple and a run. UTA left eight on the bases and had just one hit in 11 attempts with runners in scoring position.
Brad Vassar received the loss as he fell to 1-2. Vassar pitched four innings, giving up four hits and three earned runs.
Moreland, moving into sole possession of sixth on the UTA all-time appearance list with 78, was near perfect in relief to keep UTA in the contest. Moreland threw five innings and gave up just one base hit, while recording three strikeouts.
"Jacob (Moreland) was great. One it in five innings and he's done it all year long," Thomas said. "I thought was as good as he's been all year long. We had some chances to get some runs in, but yeah, he was really good tonight."
For ULM, Bouchey moved to 3-2 for the season after he went seven innings on the hill. The right-hander struck out 10, just two shy of his season high, with just four hits allowed.
Reliever Anthony Herrera earned his fourth save of the season with two scoreless frames.
After UTA took advantage of a ULM error to plate a run in the bottom of the third, the Warhawks answered right back with its three-run inning. ULM followed up a RBI double with a two-out, two-run home to right by Kyle Schimpf that was lined over the fence.
Consecutive hit-by-pitches put UTA in business in the fifth; however, a fly out, strikeout and caught stealing ended the threat.
UTA was able to cut the lead to just one after Rohrbaugh knocked a one-out triple to left. Darien McLemore sent the next pitch deep to right for a sac fly to easily score Rohrbaugh.
The Mavericks again found themselves with an opportunity in the seventh with runners on the corners and one out. A strikeout and a groundout left both stranded.
UTA had one final scoring opportunity in the ninth when Jackson Morris reached on the fourth Warhawk miscue of the night and advanced on a sacrifice bunt; however, Herrera managed to work around the base runner, getting McLean to line out hard to first for the game's final out.
The Mavs will try to salvage the series finale on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start time scheduled for Clay Gould Ballpark.
