ARLINGTON, Texas - The No. 18 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns pounded out a season-high 21 hits and Stefan Trosclair hit for the cycle to take the series finale over UT Arlington, 19-6, in seven innings on Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
UTA (23-22, 9-12 SBC) used six arms against a Cajun (29-16, 14-7 SBC) offense that finished with a pair of home runs and was 11-19 with runners in scoring position. Trosclair became just the third player in UL history to hit for the cycle.
The Mavericks' offense still racked up 10 hits of its own, including four in a four-run fifth inning that cut the UL lead to 10-5 at the time. UTA leadoff Matt McLean was 2-for-4 with a triple and a pair of runs at the dish, while RJ Williams was also 3-for-4 with a run and RBI.
Caleb Koedyker added his second home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh.
"We weren't competitive and obviously, we have to pitch better," coach Darin Thomas said. "We have to find some people other than Jacob [Moreland] and sometimes Daniel James to help us out of the pen. Disappointing day, but we'll get ready to go on Tuesday against a good Dallas Baptist team."
Starter Jake Wilcox's day was finished after 2.2 innings in which the lefty dealt six earned runs on seven hits, three punchouts and a walk to drop to 3-4 on the year.
Hogan Harris (1-0) was credited with the win for Louisiana after allowing one hit and a wild pitch in one inning. Starter Nick Lee gave up five earned runs on seven hits, one walk, a strikeout and one wild pitch.
Wilcox struck out three of the first seven hitters he faced before things got rough in the top of the third. The Cajuns unleashed the bats for six hits in the inning, including homers from Brian Mills and Trosclair.
UTA got one back in the bottom half of the frame as Matt McLean swung a triple and RJ Williams sent him home on a groundout.
But the Cajuns dropped another three runs in the fourth on a trio of base knocks against UTA relievers Dylan Schneider and Austin Gardner.
UTA cut the Cajun lead in half with a four-spot in the bottom of the fifth, getting three straight singles to start the inning before Brady Cox got a run home with a bases-loaded walk. A wild pitch from Harris and a throwing error on UL catcher Nick Thurman allowed two home, and Colton Turner picked up an RBI on a ground out to make it 10-5.
However, again the Cajuns offense answered, scoring six more times in the top of the sixth and adding three more in the top of the seventh. Reliever Jevin Huval allowed a solo homer to Koedyker in the top of the seventh before retiring the next two hitters he faced to close out the game.
UTA will next attempt to even the season series against Dallas Baptist in their final midweek game of the season at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Clay Gould Ballpark.
