SAN MARCOS, Texas - UT Arlington faces an elimination game in the Sun Belt Championship after falling 6-0 to Georgia Southern in a weather-interrupted contest that ended Friday morning at Bobcat Ballpark.
The No. 7 Mavericks (30-27) and No. 2 South Alabama (39-19) square off at 3 p.m. Friday with a spot in Saturday's semifinal round on the line. UTA beat the Jaguars 4-2 on Wednesday.
The Mavs were unable to generate any offense against Eagles reliever Landon Hughes when the game resumed after Thursday night's weather delay. Hughes held UTA hitless over seven innings after taking over for starter Chase Cohen.
The Mavericks only real chance to score came Thursday in the second by putting runners at the corners with no outs and loading the bases with one down. Cohen was able to get out of trouble to preserve a scoreless tie.
Georgia Southern (35-23) quickly jumped ahead by manufacturing a run in the third on an infield hit, stolen base and two bunts. The weather delay followed, spelling the end for Kuhnel and Cohen.
Brad Vassar opened on the mound Friday morning for the Mavs, with Hughes taking over for Georgia Southern. Hughes struck out nine.
Vassar was able to get out of a jam in the fifth thanks to a standout defensive play RJ Williams. With runners at second and third with one out, GS' Evan McDonald lined a shot down the third-base line which Williams left to snag before diving back to tag the runner to end the inning.
The Eagles blew the game open with five runs in the eighth, four charged against on reliever Jake Wilcox.
