ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington women's softball head coach Kristie Fox announced the promotion of Andy Jarvis to associate head coach on Monday.
"Coach Jarvis has proven himself to be a very integral part of our success and I am excited to reward all of his hard work," Fox said. "Since he has joined the program our hitting numbers have increased significantly and our recruiting classes have been ranked as some of the top in the country."
Jarvis has been a member of the Mavericks coaching staff for two seasons and has helped take the program to new heights.
In his first season, the Mavs set offensive records in batting average (.316), runs (338), RBI (316), hits (456) and walks (226). The year also saw the Mavs reach the NCAA Division I top 25 in several offensive statistics and achieve individual and team highs, during the season as well as achieve individual national marks and team highs. Under his guidance Shelbi Sikes finished 2015 as the Mavs new single-season RBI leader with 45.
UTA continued to grow and develop turning the 2016 season into one of the Mavs' best ever, starting with a historic 19-0 start. Working primarily with the outfield and hitters, sophomore second baseman Sandra Mendoza and freshman outfielder Krista Rude had tremendous offensive seasons, garnering only the third and fourth NFCA All-Region honors in Maverick history.
Mendoza enjoyed a record-breaking year, setting UTA's new single-season hits (76) and batting average (.461) records. She finished amongst the nation's best in many offensive categories, as she was 10th in the Division I in batting average, 25th in on-base percentage (.528) 48th in triples per game (0.08) and 54th in doubles per game (0.31).
Prior to joining the UTA staff, Jarvis spent five seasons as a volunteer assistant baseball coach at Texas Tech (2008-2012). Jarvis' responsibilities included working with the Tech hitters, defense and team's first-base coach. Jarvis also served as the team's video coordinator and assistant camp director.
While on the Red Raider coaching staff, Jarvis mentored 28 Major League Baseball Draft selections - which includes 11 positions players. He coached 29 All-Big 12 selections, 21 Academic All-Big 12 picks, 13 players who were named a Big 12 Player/Pitcher or Newcomer of the Week and four ABCA All-Region selections. He coached three Freshmen All-Americans and two All-Americans.
Jarvis helped lead the Red Raiders to 140 victories during his coaching career on the South Plains, including 36 wins over nationally-ranked opponents with an average of nine wins over ranked foes per season.
Jarvis joined the program prior to the start of the 2008 season as he followed his former collegiate coach, Dan Spencer, to Lubbock when Spencer joined the staff as associate head coach. Jarvis played under Spencer for four seasons at Oregon State and left as the program's all-time leader in hits, home runs, RBI and total bases. He helped lead the Beavers to 112 victories. Jarvis was named All-Pac 10 Honorable Mention in 2000, 2002 and 2003.
Jarvis started four years for the Beavers where he compiled a .320 batting average (232-for-725) with 141 runs, 42 doubles, three triples, 34 home runs, 173 RBI and 82 walks. He played in 201 games and started in 179 contests. In addition, Jarvis still holds the Beavers' single-game home run record (3, vs. Washington State - 2001), the career RBI and total bases record and is tied for the career home run mark. He remains in seven Oregon State all-time career top-10 record books.
After finishing his collegiate career he signed a free agent contract with the Philadelphia Phillies reaching Single-A in the Florida State League before finishing his pro career in July 2004. In two minor league seasons, Jarvis played in 80 games batting .247 (68-for-275) with 11 doubles, one triple, nine home runs, 46 RBI and 42 walks.
He then turned immediately to the coaching ranks where he was named head coach of the Cannons Baseball Club in Renton, Wash, in the American Legion Baseball League in the summers of 2005, 2006 and 2007. In 2006, Jarvis joined the coaching staff of his high school alma mater (Liberty High School) where he served as an assistant varsity coach for both basketball and baseball.
