ARLINGTON, Texas - Coming off a highly successful 2016 tournament slate, the UTA doubles tandem of Jhonathan Gonzalez and Mauricio Del Rio enter the 2017 schedule ranked 28th in the nation according to the Oracle ITA Division I men's rankings, released on Monday.
Gonzalez and Del Rio featured a win over the then eighth-ranked pair of Tommy Bennett and David Warren from Rice at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in September - the Rice tandem are 9th entering 2017. The pair was 2-1 in play during the fall, the lone defeat coming to the 44th-ranked squad from Texas.
I am so proud of Jhonathan and Mauricio," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "They had a great fall achieving great wins against the best teams in the nation. Their games complement each other in perfect sync. It is a big advantage to start the year with such an advantage in the rankings."
With the high national ranking, the pair are also ranked No. 4 in the Texas Region.
UTA is coming off a record-setting campaign in which it captured the Sun Belt Championship and had a program-record 18 wins. The 2017 schedule opens on Jan. 19 when the Mavericks host Midwestern State.
