Oct. 3, 2017 TULSA, Okla. -- Junior Mauricio Del Rio highlighted UTA's stay in the 2017 Saint Francis ITA Men's All-American Championship held at the Case Tennis Center.
The draw, serving as a qualification to the All-American Championships in California next week, featured 256 entrants into the qualifier with a lose and go home format. Del Rio advanced into the Round of 64 with wins over San Diego States Sander Gjoels Anderson (6-1, 6-2) and Nebraska's Chris Dean (6-1, 6-4). The junior fell to eventual flight champion No. 6 Chema Carranza of Wisconsin (3-6, 6-2, 6-2).
Eduard Simo was the lone Mav in the main draw to join Del Rio in the second round as he topped Eastern Kentucky's Guillem Sanchis (6-4, 6-3).
Guanarteme Nuez, earning a bye in the Round of 256) fell in a tough three-set match to Zvonimir Babic of Oles Miss. However, he'd bounce back in his lone consolation match with a 6-1, 6-1 decision against Eastern Kentucky's Parth Aggarwal. Sansidh Kommaraju picked up a consolation win as well with a 5-3, 6-3 win over Eastern Washington's Jeremy Mueller.
The fall season culminates in the ITA Texas Regionals beginning on Oct. 20. The four-day event is hosted by Texas A&M and gives the team the potential to qualify for the ITA Fall Championships.
