ATLANTA, Ga. - As much as the long shot helped UTA in its last game, it was equally as punishing on Saturday as Georgia State knocked down nine to overcome the Lady Maverick's comeback bid, 64-59, at GSU Sports Arena.
The Lady Mavs (17-7, 10-4 SBC) had their three-game road streak come to an end and fell for just the second time away from home in league play. Georgia State improved to 11-15 overall and 7-8 in the Sun Belt. Despite the setback, UTA still leads in the all-time series 5-2.
Attempting to come back from a double-digit deficit, UTA trimmed what was a 15-point GSU lead down to as close a three with under a minute left. However, UTA could not put things together when it mattered most and finished the game just two of its last 13 from the field.
Georgia State shot 52.9 percent from long range - better than its field-goal percentage of 50.0 percent - on the way to its first home win over UTA. Makeba Ponder led the effort with six of her nine falling through, as she was one of two Panthers with at least 20 points.
Battling through foul trouble, scoring was a bit tougher for the Lady Mavs. Christina Devers finished with 19 points on 6-of-14 shooting, knocking down three from 3-point land. Cierra Johnson produced 16 to go with six rebounds. Four of UTA's starters finished with four fouls.
The Lady Mavs appeared to have control of early momentum, opening the game with a 7-2 advantage and knocked down two early treys. However, Georgia State would catch fire from long range and overcame the deficit to take a lead of its own.
Georgia State's Makeba Ponder led a barrage of 3-pointers, knocking down four of her five attempts as the Panthers hit six overall and led by 13 going into the break.
The comeback attempt took a short hiatus as Georgia State scored the opening bucket of the third quarter, however, UTA would charge back with a fury. The Lady Mavs used an 8-0 run to get the deficit down to just seven points. GSU would go on a short spurt of its own to extend the lead back out before a 3-pointer trimmed it down once again and UTA was down just six with 10 minutes to play.
Rebekah VanDijk helped get UTA within five points early in the fourth with an and-1, but things unraveled once again. Georgia State knocked down another long-range attempt and went on a 7-0 run over the span of 58 seconds.
A second charge brought UTA back to within three as GSU went the final four minutes without a field goal. Turnovers would hold things back for UTA, turning it over three times in the final 30 seconds.
