BSB: No. 23 Dallas Baptist Edges UTA

Feb. 28, 2017

Box Score | Notes

ARLINGTON, Texas -- No. 23 Dallas Baptist scored seven runs combined over the fifth and sixth innings to post a 9-7 win at UTA, on Tuesday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.

UTA (2-7) faced its fifth consecutive opponent that played in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, falling to the Patriots after allowing the first-inning blast to Austin Listi and the three-run frame in the fifth to get in an early hole.

After the Mavs rallied with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game, DBU plated four runs on two hits and an error in the sixth inning to take a commanding lead. UTA got two runs back in its half of the sixth inning, scored a run in the seventh but despite getting the tying run to third base with one out, couldn't get the key RBI to even the game. DBU added a run in the ninth inning on a two-out triple.

ON THE MOUND
UTA started junior right-hander Reid Petty in his second start of the year. Petty worked into the fifth inning, allowing three hits and four walks. Petty finished with four runs allowed over his four frames. He loaded the bases without an out in the fifth inning and was replaced by lefty Brad Vassar. Vassar (0-1) worked an out into the sixth inning but loaded the bases for Dylan Schneider. Vassar finished working 1.1 innings, allowing a hit and two walks, striking out one and allowing three runs to score - with just one earned.

Schneider worked two outs before he was replaced by righty Logan Austin to start the seventh inning. After a pair of singles opened the frame, Matt Michalski came on in relief to escape the jam. Michalski tossed two shutout innings, allowing a walk and striking out three.

Dallas Baptist (6-2) starter Coby Weaver worked into the fifth inning, allowing two hits and two walks, striking out one. Weaver allowed two hits and three runs, walking two and striking out one. He was replaced by righty Jimmy Fouse (1-0) with the bases loaded in the fifth and no outs. Fouse worked an inning, allowing one hit and three runs. DBU also used Travis Stone, Gavin Fritz and Seth Elledge in relief. Elledge earned his second save of the year with a dominating final two innings of work.

LEADING THE MAVS
The Mavs collected seven hits in the game, drawing six walks and getting plunked by a pitch. Easton Johnson tied his career high with three hits, driving in two runs. UTA also got hits from Quintin Rohrbaugh, Aaron Funk, Omar Salinas and Josh Minjarez, Brady Cox and Colton Turner each scoring runs.

HOW THEY SCORED
The Patriots scored in their first opportunity, getting a two-out, solo homer from Austin Listi, his fourth of the year, in the top of the first inning.

DBU rallied in the top of the fifth inning to load the bases with no outs and chase Petty from the mound. Luke Bandy drew a bases-loaded walk to score one run and Jameson Hannah greeted Vassar with a two-strike single off his leg to score one run and re-load the bags. Vassar then got a double play ball for a pair of outs, with a run scoring on the play.

The Mavs had their best chance in the first five innings in the bottom of the fifth, getting a leadoff double from Rohrbaugh and a four-pitch walk to Turner to start the frame. After Vaughan drew a 10-pitch walk to load the bases, DBU made a pitching change before facing Minjarez. Minjarez was hit by a pitch to force in a run and then Johnson singled into right-centerfield to score a pair of runs. Phil Berthiaume followed by hitting into a double play but Minjarez was able to score on the play to even the game at 4-4.

In the top of the sixth inning, DBU rallied to load the bases without an out, getting a hit batter, an error and a walk. Bandy then doubled into the gap to score a pair. Hannah then hung a sacrifice fly deep into center to score the third run and give DBU a 7-4 lead.

UTA mounted a rally in the bottom of the sixth inning, getting leadoff walks from Omar Salinas and Cox and RBI groundouts from Rohrbaugh and Turner.

In the seventh inning, UTA got leadoff singles up the middle from Minjarez and Johnson and after a sac bunt pushed the runners into scoring position, Minjarez scored on a wild pitch. With Johnson at third and one out, DBU got a swinging strikeout for the second out and a fly out to escape the jam with a one-run lead.

Bandy's two-out double in the ninth gave the Patriots a 9-7 lead.
