BSB: Simmons Works Quality Start in Loss

March 10, 2017

Box Score | Notes

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Kadon Simmons worked into the seventh inning for the 10th time in his last 11 starts but his quality pitching effort wasn't enough as Milwaukee posted a 5-2 win over UTA to open a three-game series, on Friday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.

UTA (6-8) had its four-game winning streak snapped with the loss, as the Mavs found itself fighting from behind after allowing a first-inning run. The teams traded single runs in each of its half of the fifth and seventh innings, with UTA stranding the bases loaded in the seventh. Milwaukee (7-6) answered in the eighth inning to stretch its lead beyond reach.

ON THE MOUND
Simmons (1-2) worked into the eighth inning, tossing over seven innings, allowing eight hits and four runs - three earned - walking none and striking out six. Simmons has worked into at least the seventh inning in 14 of his 19 career starts and in 10 of his last 11.

After a leadoff double in the eighth, Simmons was relieved by righty Jordon West. West, Adam Meyer and Austin Gardner also worked in relief of Simmons to escape the eighth. Matt Michalski tossed the ninth.

Milwaukee starter Austin Shulfer (2-1) - who entered the game with a 0.96 ERA in 18.2 innings - worked six innings, allowing five hits and one run, walking one and striking out seven. He was replaced in the seventh by Alex Fischer. Fischer, Reed Blake and Brandon Parr each worked in relief.

LEADING THE MAVS
The Mavericks collected seven hits in the game, led by a two-hit game from Aaron Funk and Josh Minjarez. UTA also got hits from Phil Berthiaume, Brady Cox and Easton Johnson, with Omar Salinas driving in two runs and drawing a walk.

HOW THEY SCORED
Milwaukee got on the board in the first inning as Chris Kelly lined a ball to shallow left field. Attempting to make a diving catch, the ball got behind Rohrbaugh in leftfield, allowing Kelly to motor to third for a triple. After an out, Devin Rybacki doubled into the gap to score Kelly.

In the top of the fifth inning, Matt Quartel led off with a double off the wall in rightfield, scoring on Mike Jordahl's sacrifice fly.

The Mavs manufactured a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Funk led off with a double into the gap, taking third on Berthiaume's groundout. Omar Salinas followed with a sacrifice fly to rightfield, allowing Funk to slide in safe.

Milwaukee stretched its lead in the seventh inning, getting a single to rightfield from Daulton Varsho. After the first out, UTA committed a throwing error on a potential double play ball, allowing Varsho to take third with one out and Matt Quartel to reach. John Boidanis then chopped a single through the right side, scoring Varsho.

UTA got the run back in the top of the seventh, as Johnson led off with a single through the right side and after a groundout pushed him into scoring posit and a single from Berthiaume moved him to third, scored on a RBI fielder's choice from Salinas.

Milwaukee plated two runs on two hits and a walk in the eighth inning to stretch its lead to 5-2.
