BSB: Offense Explodes in Series-Clinching Win

March 12, 2017

Box Score | Notes

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Easton Johnson and Will Olson combined for seven of UTA's 13 hits, leading the Mavericks to an 8-5 win over Milwaukee to claim the rubber match of the three-game series, on a chilly Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.

UTA (8-8) secured its first rubber match series win of the year and its second series win of 2017 with the Sunday result. After Milwaukee won the opener, 5-2 on Friday, UTA evened the set on Saturday with a 5-4 win and claimed the rubber match with the comeback win on Sunday.

Milwaukee opened the scoring with the first four runs of the game, before the Mavs bounced back with a three-run fourth to get within a run. After the Panthers extended their lead with a run in the fifth, UTA mounted a furious rally in the seventh inning to take the lead, highlighted by a two-out, three-run double from RJ Williams.

A native of Sherman, Texas, Olson is off to a blistering start to his 2017 season. Over his last five games, Olson is 12 for 15 and has reached base safely in 20 of his last 26 trips to the plate. Over his last 20 plate appearances, Olson has reached base safely 16 times. On the year, Olson is hitting .459 (17-for-37) with a .545 on-base percentage.

ON THE MOUND
UTA lefty Jakob Hernandez made his fifth start of the year. The 6-foot-4, 260-pounder worked five innings, allowing seven hits and five runs - four earned - walking two and striking out seven.

UTA turned to lefty Jake Wilcox in relief of Hernandez to start the sixth inning. Wilcox (1-0) worked two shutout innings allowing just a single with two strikeouts. After the Mavs took the lead in the seventh, UTA turned to righty Dylan Schneider to start the eighth. Schneider got two outs in the eighth before Adam Meyer retired a lefty to end the inning.

Meyer pitched the Mavs into the ninth inning with a pair of outs before UTA turned to senior righty Austin Gardner for the final out and his second save of the year.

Milwaukee (7-8) starter Jay Peters worked into the seventh inning, tossing six innings, allowing nine hits and five runs, walking one and striking out four. The Panthers used Clayton Uselman (0-1) and Jake Sommers in relief.

LEADING THE MAVS
Johnson and Olson led the way offensively, with Johnson collecting a career-high four hits. Olson finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and a double, with UTA also getting the big hit from Williams, who was 2-for-4 with the three RBI. UTA also got key hits from Zac Cook, Quintin Rohrbaugh, Omar Salinas and Aaron Funk, with Noah Vaughan scoring a run and driving in one. Colton Turner added a key walk and run.

HOW THEY SCORED
For the third straight game in the series Milwaukee opened the scoring, loading the bases with three singles in the top of the second with one out. Billy Quirke chopped into an RBI fielder's choice to score Ben Chally, who had singled to leadoff, to plate the first run of the game.

In the top of the fourth inning, Milwaukee plated three runs for a 4-0 lead. Chally led off with a single, taking second on a failed pickoff attempt. After an out, Cole Heili drew a walk and Dylan Detert scored Chally with a RBI double to left. After the second out, Chris Kelly singled to rightfield to score a pair.

UTA plated three runs on three hits in the fourth inning, starting with a single from Johnson and a RBI double - off the wall in right-centerfield - from Olson. After Rohrbaugh drew a walk, Salinas scored Olson with an RBI single to rightfield. After a deep fly out from Colton Turner, Rohrbaugh took third with one out, scoring on Vaughan's sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Milwaukee answered in the fifth, plating a run on one hit and two UTA errors.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Cook painted a double down the leftfield line to leadoff the frame, taking third on an infield single from Johnson. Olson then greeted the lefty reliever with a chopper on the right side, with the ball misplayed for an error and Cook scoring on the play. Rohrbaugh followed with a run-scoring single through the left side, with Johnson's run tying the game. Salinas moved both runners into scoring position with a slow grounder on the right side, bringing up Turner in an RBI chance. Milwaukee got the lead runner at the plate for the second out before Williams smashed a three-run double into the gap, scoring the trio for an 8-5 UTA lead.

NEXT
UTA will return to action on Tuesday, hosting No. 11 Texas Tech at Globe Life Park, the home of the Texas Rangers. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. CT.
