ARLINGTON, Texas -- Abilene Christian used a five-run second inning to build an early lead and post a 9-1 win at UTA on Wednesday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.
UTA (9-9) fell behind early in the tilt with ACU, a night after a thrilling 5-1 win over No. 4 Texas Tech at Globe Life Ballpark. The Wildcats used a five-run second and answered UTA's run in the bottom of the frame with a run in the top of the third and a two-run fourth.
The two teams split the two-game, home-and-home series in 2017 as the Mavs posted a 5-4 win at Abilene Christian last week.
ON THE MOUND
The Mavs turned to senior right-hander Matt Michalski (0-1) for his first start of the season. Michalski got four outs, allowing eight hits and five runs, before giving way to righty Logan Austin in relief in the second inning. Austin escaped the jam to strand a pair of runners and working 1.2 innings, before Brad Vassar took over to start the fifth inning.
Vassar worked a shutout fifth inning and Dylan Schneider took over in the sixth, fanning the side. Lefty Adam Meyer worked the seventh inning, Jud Kinzy tossed the eighth inning and Parker Schkade worked the ninth in his collegiate debut.
Abilene Christian (9-7) starter Nick Skeffington (1-1) tossed a gem in his second career appearance, allowing six hits and one run in 5.2 innings, walking three and striking out four. ACU used righty Blake Bouffard to escape the sixth inning, working the final 2.1 innings. Zach Kornely worked in the ninth.
AT THE PLATE
The Mavs were held to six hits in the game, getting two knocks from Brady Cox and hits rom Easton Johnson, Quintin Rohrbaugh, Colton Turner and Phil Berthiaume. Noah Vaughan drove in UTA's run with an RBI groundout.
HOW THEY SCORED
ACU opened up the game in the top of the second inning, plating five runs on six hits and a walk in the frame.
The Mavs answered in the bottom of the second inning as Rohrbaugh led off with a triple into the left-centerfield gap, scoring on Vaughan's RBI groundout to the right side.
The Wildcats added a run in the third inning, getting a single and a sacrifice fly, sandwiched around an error and wild pitch.
In the top of the fourth inning, ACU plated two runs on two hits and a walk to take an 8-1 lead.
Anthony Dominguez hit a solo homer in the seventh inning to give ACU a 9-1 lead.
