ARLINGTON, Texas - UTA split a pair of competitive matches this week at the UTA Tennis Center as its record improved to 10-5 this season.
The Mavericks opened the week with a 7-0 win over Navy before dropping a closely contested match against No. 24 Columbia 5-2.
"It was a tough one against Columbia, they are a top team in the nation," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "We let go of some of the opportunities against them. We need to make sure we continue working hard to capitalize on the opportunities that we get."
The Mavs picked up a win over Navy to get things going on Tuesday. A pair of 6-4 wins in doubles got things started before sweeping all six of the singles matches. Daniel Armengol and Mauricio Del Rio each picked up 6-1, 6-0 victories, while senior Pablo Colvee was able to battle a 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 6 to give UTA the sweep.
Doubles play was much closer against Columbia. Jhonathan Gonzalez and Del Rio, ranked No. 52 in the nation, battled closely in a 7-5 defeat. Armengol and Guanarteme Nuez won 6-3 leaving things up to No. 2. However, Mario Muniesa and Marcos Sanz couldn't take the tiebreak, dropping a 7-6 decision.
In singles, Columbia picked up early points at No. 2 and No. 6 to move within one of the win. UTA battled with singles wins by Gonzalez and Del Rio, but Columbia finished things off by taking the remaining matches.
UTA will enjoy a brief day break before returning to the court against Air Force on Friday at the UTA Tennis Center.
