LAS COLINAS, Texas -- UTA men's golf showed grit and determination on the final day of the Bob Sitton Invitational, storming back to claim eighth place out of 24 teams after a disappointing second round.
The Mavericks averaged a season-low 288 on Day 1 to fill a tie for third before falling to 16th after a second round at TPC Four Seasons. UTA sharpened up to fire its lowest round of the week with a plus-1 285 to jump to eighth and total an 885. Josh Radcliff, who kept a consistent presence in the top-15 throughout, finished in a tie for eighth with a three-day total of 71-74-40.
"It was a really nice comeback by the team today after a disappointing day yesterday," UTA coach Stuart Deane said. "We showed some Maverick stubbornness today to never give in. We were led by senior Josh Radcliff with a top-10 finish. This will give us momentum going to North Carolina."
Sun Belt member and No. 24 Arkansas State took home the championship, recording 282's and holding onto first place in the second and third rounds. The Mavericks finished three strokes behind Illinois State. Other Sun Belt foe and rival Texas State claimed 11th with a 37-over 889.
UTA returns to action Sunday in Wilmington, N.C. at the Cape Fear National Intercollegiate.
Radcliff was tied for 13th heading into the final day, and pairs of bogeys and birdies on the final four holes on Thursday left him 1-under to gain some momentum in the individual standings.
Zach Galliford also shot his lowest round of the three on Day 3, a 70 to tie for 32nd. The senior held a 2-under on the front nine, and back-to-back bogeys on holes 14 and 15 raised him 1-under. Galliford hit par on the final three marks to keep pace.
Tanner Gore tied for 38th place with an overall 223. His 73 on the final day was his second-best of the week. The sophomore opened fire in the first round with a 2-under 69.
Camilo Avila shared a tie for 65th after turning in a 227. His 74 start in the first round was replicated on Thursday to lower his total 14-over. Jake Greenspoon finished strong with a week-low 72 to settle 18-over 231 in his first appearance of the spring.
