ATLANTA, Ga. -- Georgia State got a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning and a strong start from freshman Hunter Gaddis, posting a 2-1 win over UTA to even the three-game series, on Saturday afternoon at the GSU Baseball Complex.
UTA (10-10, 1-1 Sun Belt Conference) and Georgia State (10-9, 1-1 SBC) were locked in pitching dual through seven innings as Gaddis took a no-hitter and a 1-0 lead into the top of the eighth inning. UTA's Quintin Rohrbaugh tied up the game with a homer in the eighth, before GSU shortstop Justin Jones cranked the game-winning homer in the bottom of the eighth inning.
ON THE MOUND
Patterson twirled a gem, allowing only two hits and one walk, striking out five in 7.1 innings. A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Patterson started 21 of 27 hitters he faced with a first-pitch strike and allowed only a first-inning double and the eighth-inning homer in his start.
The Mavs turned to Adam Meyer and Austin Gardner for the final two outs in the eighth inning.
Gaddis worked 7.2 innings, allowing only two hits and one run, walking one and striking out six. GSU also used Devin Vainer and Logan Barnette in relief. Barnette earned the win, working the final 1.1 innings.
AT THE DISH
UTA was handcuffed by Gaddis for the majority of the game, before breaking through on the Rohrbaugh homer in the eighth for the first hit of the game. Rohrbaugh was 2-for-4 and UTA also got hits from Will Olson and Christian Hollie. Easton Johnson, Omar Salinas and Aaron Funk each added walks with Zac Cook getting plunked by a pitch.
HOW THEY SCORED
The Panthers got on the board first in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a leadoff error and a sacrifice fly from Cam Sperry.
UTA answered in the top of the eighth with its first hit of the game, a solo shot to leftfield from Rohrbaugh, his second of the year.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Justin Jones - who had the only hit in the game entering his at-bat - belted a solo homer on a 2-1 offering over the leftfield fence, his first of the year. It gave GSU a 2-1 lead.
