ARLINGTON, Texas -- After rallying from a five-run hole to tie the game, UTA surrendered four runs in the top of the eighth inning that lifted Georgia Southern to a 9-5 win over the Mavericks in the rubber match of the three-game series, on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
UTA (12-13, 3-3 Sun Belt Conference) fell behind early in the deciding third game of the series as GS took advantage of an error to score five unearned in the frame. The Mavs rallied with a run in the third and three in the sixth inning to get within a run, before evening the game with a key hit in the seventh inning.
A leadoff single in the eighth inning from Mason McWhorter set the stage for the GS game-winning rally, with the Eagles plating four runs in the frame for the lead.
ON THE MOUND
UTA starter Jakob Hernandez suffered the hard-luck loss, allowing five unearned runs over six innings, surrendering seven hits and two walks, striking out seven. Daniel James (0-1) took over in the seventh inning. James stranded a runner inherited but allowed the two runs in the eighth inning. Jake Wilcox also worked in relief.
Georgia Southern (14-10, 3-3 Sun Belt) starter Chase Cohen worked 6.1 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs, walking three and striking out four. With the tying run at second and one out in the seventh inning, GS turned to lefty Anthony Paesano to face a left-handed hitter. Paesano surrendered the game-tying hit before Connor Simmons (3-0) took over on the mound. Landon Hughes worked the ninth inning.
AT THE DISH
Omar Salinas led the Mavs at the plate, collecting three hits and driving in a run. RJ Williams had a two-run triple and a single in the ninth and Aaron Funk added a pair of hits. UTA also got hits from Quintin Rohrbaugh, Noah Vaughan and Christian Hollie.
HOW THEY SCORED
GS opened the game in the top of the first inning by loading the bases with one out, taking advantage of a walk, single and error. After Hernandez got the second out, Evan McDonald poked a single through the right side, scoring a pair of unearned runs. Brazil followed with ripped a two-run single up the middle, just out of reach of a diving Williams. Logan Baldwin then scored Brazil with a single through the left side.
UTA got on the board in the bottom of the third inning as Funk led off with a bunt single, scoring on Rohrbaugh's two-out double on a 3-2 offering into right-centerfield.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, UTA cut into the lead, getting a leadoff single from Salinas and a one-out walk from Olson. After the second out advanced the pair into scoring position, Vaughan fought off a 3-2 pitch into rightfield to score Salinas. Williams then lined a two-run triple into the right-centerfield gap, scoring Olson and Vaughan to cut the lead to 5-4.
The Mavs tied the game up in the seventh inning, getting a leadoff single into shallow centerfield from Funk, who took second on a sacrifice bunt from Easton Johnson. Salinas then singled into shallow rightfield to score Funk from second to even the game at 5-5.
GS answered to take the lead in the eighth inning as Brazil singled off the outstretched right arm of James to score the go-ahead run. Baldwin tripled off the base of the wall in rightfield, scoring Brazil from first. Curry followed with a single down the leftfield line, scoring Baldwin for an 8-5 lead.
