CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- Aaron Funk's three-run homer in the eighth inning erased a one-run hole and gave UTA a 4-2 win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, sweeping the three-game series, on Sunday afternoon at Chapman Field.
UTA (5-7) erased the 2-1 hole in the eighth inning behind the one-out blast from Funk, the first roundtripper of his career. The Mavs also rode a strong pitching outing from junior southpaw Jakob Hernandez to his first career win and the three-game sweep vs. the Islanders.
ON THE MOUND
Hernandez earned his third start of the year and fired a gem. Hernandez (1-0) charted his first career win, tossing a complete-game nine innings, allowing only six hits and no walks, striking out 10.
The Islanders started Glover on the mound, who worked 3.2 innings without allowing a run, scattering four hits and three walks. TAMU-CC also used Romere, Worrell, Holland and Cole Carter in relief.
LEADING THE MAVS
Funk's three-run blast was the big blow offensively for UTA, which also got two-hit games from seniors Brady Cox and Quintin Rohrbaugh. The Mavs added hits from Noah Vaughan, Josh Minjarez, Zac Cook and Easton Johnson.
HOW THEY SCORED
The Islanders took a two-run lead in the second inning, getting three straight singles, with the last coming as an RBI knock and the final run coming in on a bases-loaded sac bunt.
UTA got a run back in the fifth inning as Johnson led off with a single and Funk drew a walk. After a pair of outs and the runners advanced into scoring position, Rohrbaugh singled up the middle to score Johnson
In the eighth inning, UTA mounted a game-winning rally to plate three runs on Funk's blast. Cook reached on a one-out single and after a throwing error allowed Johnson to reach to put a pair of runners on. Funk then smashed a three-run blast on a 1-1 offering to give the Mavs a 4-2 lead.

The Mavs continue their four-game road swing with a midweek tilt at Abilene Christian on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
