NORMAN, Okla. -- Noah Vaughan drove in seven runs in the first two innings to give UTA an 11-3 lead at Oklahoma, but a lightning delay led to the cancelation of the contest - with no make-up date scheduled - on Tuesday night at L. Dale Mitchell Ballpark.
UTA (23-17) opened up the game against the Sooners (28-15) with an 11-3 lead through the first 1.5 innings, before lightening ended the contest. In order for the game to be official, five complete innings needed to be played. Both coaches expressed great interest in finishing the game but Mother Nature had other plans.
ON THE MOUND
UTA starter Jake Wilcox (2-1) threw 16 pitches to open the game, allowing the first four hitters to reach, on a homer, two walks and an RBI single, ending his outing without an out recorded. With runners on the corners and no outs in the first, UTA turned to sophomore righty Dylan Schneider in relief. Schneider worked a shutout innings before the delay.
OU starter Dylan Grove (1-3) worked 1.1 innings, allowing six hits and 10 runs, walking four and striking out two. Ryan Madden took over for Grove in the second inning.
LEADING THE MAVS
Statistics do not count for the game as it was not official, robbing Vaughan of a historic game. He opened the outing 2-for-2 with seven RBI, a triple and a homer. UTA also got a two-run homer from RJ Williams - which would've been his first of the year. UTA also got hits from Zac Cook, Brady Cox, Will Olson, Quintin Rohrbaugh and Aaron Funk.
HOW THEY SCORED
UTA opened the scoring in the first inning, plating four runs on two hits for an early 4-0 lead. Cook led off the inning with a full-count walk and after a pair of outs, Olson moved him to second with a two-out single. Rohrbaugh followed with a walk to load the bases for Vaughan. Vaughan pounded a grand slam - his seventh homer of the year - inside the foul pole down the leftfield line. It marked UTA's first grand slam of the year.
Domenic DeRenzo immediately got on the board in the bottom of the first inning, belting the first pitch of the game from Wilcox over the left-centerfield fence for his third homer of the year. The next two hitters drew walks and Steele Walker ripped a run-scoring single to rightfield, scoring Jack Flansburg. After Schneider came on in relief, Austin O'Brien hung a sac fly to score Renae Martinez.
UTA opened the top of the second with a leadoff walk from Funk, before Williams smashed his first homer of the year over the leftfield fence, giving the Mavs a 6-3 lead. Cook then ripped a double into the left-centerfield gap, his fourth of the year and Cox pushed him to third with a single to centerfield with two strikes. Salinas scored Cook with a sac fly to centerfield for a 7-3 lead. Olson followed with a walk and Rohrbaugh loaded the bases with a single into shallow leftfield. Vaughan then delivered with the bases loaded for the second straight inning, ripping a three-run triple to give the Mavs a 10-3 lead. Funk then scored Vaughan with a double down the leftfield line for an eight-run lead.
