ARLINGTON, Texas -- No. 29 Coastal Carolina plated two runs each the eighth and ninth innings to erase a one-run lead for No. 24 UTA, posting a series-clinching 4-1 win over the Mavs, on Saturday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
UTA (29-20, 19-7 Sun Belt Conference) and Coastal Carolina (33-18-1, 18-7-1 Sun Belt) were locked in a pitching duel between UTA junior Trae Patterson and Coastal Carolina senior right-hander Andrew Beckwith a hero of the 2016 College World Series. UTA broke through in the seventh inning but Coastal used two doubles and two walks in the eighth inning to take the lead and broke it open with two in the ninth.
Coastal posted a pair of hotly contested wins to open the series, outlasting UTA 5-4 in the series opener on Friday, which snapped the Mavs 10-game league winning streak, a program best.
ON THE MOUND
Patterson, a native of Fort Worth, worked his team-leading 10th quality start of the year. He fired seven shutout innings, scattering seven hits and two walks, striking out three. He worked through traffic throughout the game, stranding seven runners in his outing and working around leadoff runners in four of his seven frames. He started 19 of the 28 hitters he faced with first-pitch strikes and extended his streak of innings without allowing an earned run to 14 innings.
With a 1-0 lead to open the eighth inning, the Mavs turned to junior right-hander Daniel James (0-2), the conference leader in saves. James surrendered two doubles but appeared to be on the verge of working out of the jam with the game tied at 1-1 before issuing walks to load the bases. James worked the 1.2 innings, allowing six hits and four runs, walking two. Dylan Schneider came on to get the final out of the game.
Beckwith (7-1) improved to 7-0 in conference play firing eight strong innings, walking four and striking out three. After allowing a leadoff knock to open the ninth, Austin Kitchen came on to get the final three outs for his fifth save of the year.
LEADING THE MAVS
Beckwith handcuffed the Mavs throughout the game with his ability to change speeds and arm slots with ease. UTA was held to four hits - including two from Will Olson - with Aaron Funk and Zac Cook each notching singles. Noah Vaughan, Omar Salinas and Quintin Rohrbaugh each drew walks, with Rohrbaugh extending his streak of games reached safely to 42 straight, the second-most in program history, adding a ninth-inning hit.
HOW THEY SCORED
UTA got on the board first in the bottom of the seventh inning, getting a leadoff walk from Vaughan. After an out, Funk chopped the first pitch he saw through the right side, allowing Vaughan to motor to third. The relay throw was cut off and the throw from the CCU infield sailed high, allowing Vaughan to score from third for a 1-0 lead.
Coastal Carolina immediately answered in the top of the eighth inning, getting a leadoff double off James from Jordan Gore. After a pair of outs, Kieton Rivers ripped a run-scoring double to tie the game down the leftfield line. The next two hitters walked to load the bases and Cory Wood reached on an infield single, off the diving glove of Brady at third base, to score Rivers for a 2-1 lead.
Kevin Woodall Jr. stretched the lead for the Chants with a two-out solo homer down the leftfield line, his conference-leading 17th of the year. Rivers singled home the fourth run of the game for CCU.
