ARLINGTON, Texas -- No. 29 Coastal Carolina used early runs to build a lead and posted a 5-0 win over No. 24 UTA to sweep the three-game series in the 2017 home finale for the Mavs on Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
UTA (29-21, 19-8 Sun Belt Conference) suffered the series finale setback to Coastal Carolina (34-18-1, 19-7-1 Sun Belt). The Chants won the first two games in the series, 5-4 on Friday and 4-1 on Saturday. CCU plated two runs in the third and added on in the fourth, fifth and ninth innings.
With the loss, the Mavs have fallen into third place overall in the conference standings. UTA trails South Alabama by one game and Coastal Carolina by 0.5 games but own a 2.5 game lead on Louisiana in the Western Division.
ON THE MOUND
UTA junior starter Jakob Hernandez (6-1) suffered his first career loss, allowing the early damage to the Chants. Hernandez worked six innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, walking two and striking out six.
Senior UTA righty Austin Gardner took over to open the seventh inning and fired three innings, allowing five hits and one run, striking out four.
Coastal Carolina junior starter Zack Hopeck (4-2) worked 5.2 shutout innings, allowing only seven hits and one walk, striking out a career-high nine. With a two-out walk in the sixth inning, CCU turned to lefty Austin Kitchen in relief. Kitchen fired two perfect innings before Cole Schaefer came on in the eighth to get the final four outs.
LEADING THE MAVS
UTA collected seven hits, led by a two-hit game from RJ Williams. UTA also got hits from Zac Cook, Brady Cox, Omar Salinas, Will Olson and Noah Vaughan.
HOW THEY SCORED
Coastal Carolina took a two-run lead in the top of the second inning, getting a two-run homer from Billy Cooke, his ninth of the year. Cooke worked the count to 2-2 and sent the ninth pitch of the at-bat over the fence in leftfield.
The Chants added on to their lead in the fourth inning, getting a leadoff single from Wood Meyers and a double from Kieton Rivers on an 0-2 offering. After a strikeout, Kyle Skeels hung a sac fly to score Myers.
CCU added a run in the top of the fifth inning, getting a leadoff walk to third with one out, with Kevin Woodall Jr., hanging a sac fly to score Cooke.
The Chants added on in the ninth, getting a two-out RBI single from Cooke to score Cory Wood, who doubled with two outs.

The Mavs will return to action on Tuesday, traveling to face No. 4 TCU at 6:30 p.m. CT.
