ARLINGTON, Texas â€" UTA coach John Sauerhage and freshman Justin Domangue collected individual postseason accolades from the Sun Belt Conference, the league office announced Friday. Voting was done by the conference's coaches.
Sauerhage was named the SBC Men's Coach of the Year after guiding the Mavericks to the league title last week in Arlington. The 35-point victory secured UTA the league's "triple crown," achieved by victories in cross country and indoor track.
It was just the second triple crown in Sun Belt history, joining the one that UTA claimed in 2013, its first year in the league. Sauerhage has now won 31 conference coach of the year honors, including nine during his time in the SBC.
Domangue, a freshman from Alvarado, Texas, was named the SBC Men's Most Outstanding Newcomer after earning a pair of bronze medals in distance events.
He placed third by .002 in the 5000 meters with a clocking of 14:46.607 in an epic sprint to the finish. On Friday night, Domangue opened the meet by grabbing third in the 10,000m with a time of 30:56.98.
