AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 25 Texas plated four runs through the first five innings to build an early lead, leading the Longhorns to a 4-1 win over No. 23 UTA to snap the Mavs winning streak at eight games, on a perfect Tuesday night at Disch-Falk Field.
In the first-ever matchup between the two schools where both teams were ranked, UTA (26-18) saw its eight-game winning streak snapped after allowing the early damage to the Longhorns. The Mavs climbed into the top-25 rankings for the first time since 2001 on Monday, ranking No. 23 by Collegiate Baseball. Texas (31-16) is ranked No. 25 by Baseball America.
UT opened the scoring with a single run in the first and after UTA answered with a run in the second inning, took the lead for good with a run run third. UTA had several chances but hit into four double plays to end innings in four of the first five frames. Texas leads college baseball in double plays turned.
ON THE MOUND
UTA senior starter Matt Michalski (0-1) worked 2.2 innings in his second start of the year, allowing five hits and three runs, walking one and striking out three. Austin Gardner replaced him in the third inning, working 2.1 innings, allowing just a solo homer with two strikeouts. After only throwing 78 pitches on Friday in a win over No. 20 Louisiana, senior Kadon Simmons worked a shutout sixth inning in relief. Adam Meyer tossed a shutout seventh and Daniel James worked a shutout ninth inning.
Texas starter Kyle Johnston, a regular in the weekend rotation, worked 2.1 innings, allowing five hits and one run, walking three and striking out one in 59 pitches. With the bases loaded and one out in the third, UT called on lefty Nick Kennedy (7-0) in relief. Kennedy got a line-out double play to escape the threat and worked a strong 3.1 innings, allowing just a hit and two walks, striking out one on 42 pitches. Tyler Schimpf took over to open the seventh inning, tossing two shutout innings with three strikeouts.
LEADING THE MAVS
The Mavs collected a game-high eight hits but couldn't secure the key knocks with runners in scoring position. UTA got two-hit games from Aaron Funk and Quintin Rohrbaugh and knocks from RJ Williams, Brady Cox, Noah Vaughan and Christian Hollie.
HOW THEY SCORED
Texas opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead on three hits and a UTA error. Kody Clemens singled with one out and Travis Jones scored him with an RBI double down the rightfield line.
UTA answered in the top of the second inning, getting a walk from Rohrbaugh and singles from Vaughan and Hollie to load the bases to open the frame. After a fielder's choice got Rohrbaugh out at the plate as the lead runner, Funk lined a single into right-centerfield that allowed Vaughan to score UTA's first run of the game.
After the Mavs hit into a tough-luck double play with the bases loaded to end the top of the third inning, Patrick Mathis led off with a walk and took third on Kody's second hit of the game. After a strikeout, Kacy Clemens hung a sac fly to centerfield to score Mathis. Ryan Reynolds then doubled into the gap to score Kody for a 3-1 lead.
Travis Jones added to UT's lead with a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth inning, his fourth homer of the year.
