MT: Harvard spoils season opener

Jan. 21, 2018

Final Stats

DALLAS - The 2018 season opener was spoiled by the road team as Harvard topped UT Arlington 6-1 on Sunday at the SMU Tennis Complex.

The Mavericks were unable to get momentum early with the Crimson sailing through doubles play. Harvard improved to 2-0 on the season, having topped SMU on Friday to open its season. UTA fell to 0-1 and will be back at home to begin a six-match stand on Feb. 3 when it hosts Seminole State and Cameron at the UTA Tennis Center.

"It was a very tough match, we worked hard and the players on Harvard are pretty tough, they are a team that plays well indoors and we had our hands full for sure," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "As a season opener, it is good to have a tough match to know where we are and what are the things we need to work on. We played them tough. I am happy for Teme who played a very clean match and really executed shots and made very few unforced errors. I am looking forward to the rest of the season, we are excited and we were exposed at a very good level and could have won a few points here and there to make it different."

Guanarteme Nuez earned the lone UTA point as he was able to fend off Jean Thirouin in the No. 1 position by a final of 7-6, 6-3. Enrique Pardo played a close match at No. 2, but couldn't hang in the match as he fell 6-4, 6-3.

UTA was swept in No. 2 doubles, however were close at No. 1 but Nuez and Mauricio Del Rio were broken at 3-3 before Harvad closed out the match.
