LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – For the third-straight round Tuesday at the Little Rock Invitational, the UT Arlington men's golf team bettered its previous score as the Mavericks wrapped up their penultimate fall tournament at Chenal Country Club.
UTA tied for 14th place overall with a 916 total following a final-round 303 – improving upon a 304 2nd round and a 309 1st round. Freshman
Kyle Cox led the Mavericks with a final-round even-par 72, matching his career best, as he wrapped up his fourth collegiate event by pacing UTA with a 226 total.
No. 19 Arkansas State put together a brilliant final round of 282 to surpass overnight leader and No. 23 UNLV to claim the trophy with an 863 total – one shot better than the Rebels and two clear of Illinois State.
Play was suspended due to darkness with a few holes remaining in the 2nd round on Monday, which the Mavs and the other 16 teams in the field completed early on Tuesday. After greens were re-cut, the players were re-paired and came back out for the final round.
One of the players who needed to return to finish his 2nd round was
Tanner Gore, who signed for a season-low-tying 70. Overall, Gore tied for 46th overall following a final-round 77 and 227 total.
Rounding out the UTA scoring for the day was
Paul Gonzalez with a 75,
Caleb Hicks with a 79 and
Zakary Jones with an 81.
Gonzalez – who led UTA with a 73.13 scoring average entering the tournament – had to withdraw in the opening round because of a hand injury, but fought back and played the final two rounds, recording a 75 in the 2nd round as well.
The Mavs will now turn their attention toward Southwest Florida next week to wrap up their fall season at Florida Gulf Coast's home event Oct. 28-29.
