ARLINGTON, Texas – Junior
Justin Domangue has been awarded an at-large individual berth into next weekend's 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championships, the NCAA has announced. He becomes the sixth UTA men's runner ever to qualify for the national meet.
Â
At the NCAA South Central Regional on Friday, Domangue placed eighth with a 10k time of 31:58.9. It equaled the best finish ever by a UTA runner at regionals, matching Craig Lautenslager's eighth-place effort in 2016. Despite a mishap around the 4k mark, the native of Alvarado, Texas, still managed to cross just 22 seconds off the winning time.
Â
The top four individuals not on the South Central Regional's two qualifying teams automatically advanced. Domangue was the sixth-best finisher from a non-advancing school but was added to the field Saturday after an at-large selection process.
Â
He joins Mark Newland (1977), Ben Melly (1987), Henrik Skoog (1998),
Michael Guerrero (2016) and Lautenslager (2016) as NCAA participants.
Â
Domangue will compete in the 10k race on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 11:45 a.m. (CT). The meet is held in Madison, Wis., at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course. The meet will be televised live on FloTrack.org.
