SAN FRANCISCO – UT Arlington is looking to bounce back from a tough Black Friday loss at Fresno State when it closes a two-game trek through California on Sunday at San Francisco.
The Lady Mavericks, tipping at 4 p.m. CT against the Dons, are 2-2 after falling in their first road test of the season. UTA put itself in an early hole, and despite coming back from multiple double-digit deficits to within one, couldn't finish strong to pull off the comeback bid. San Francisco is 2-2 with wins over San Jose State and Cal Poly.
Three were in double figures in Friday's contest, led by 14 points from freshman
Claire Chastain, the second game in which the Shawnee, Okla. native has led in scoring in her short UTA career.
Aysia Evans scored 11, while
Cierra Johnson finished with 10.
Katie Ferrell continued her impressive look on the stat sheet as she finished with nine rebounds, six assists and three steals. Her 6.5 assists and 3.5 steals per game lead the Sun Belt.
Sparking a run to start the fourth quarter, UTA trimmed the FSU lead down to just one with six minutes to play. However, the shots would go cold over the next six minutes as UTA couldn't get a bucket to fall. The defense kept the Lady Mavs in the hunt, but the Bulldogs would hit on their free throws down the stretch and force key turnovers to claim the 70-61 victory, avenging a loss to UTA in 2017.
