ARLINGTON, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi used single runs in the first and eighth innings and held on for a 2-1 win over UTA baseball, on a cloudy and rainy Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
UTA (1-2) allowed single runs in the first and eighth innings and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (2-1) was able to hold off a ninth-inning rally and limit the Mavs to just one run, with UTA stranding the tying run in scoring position to end the game.
ON THE MOUND
UTA freshman right-hander David Moffat made his collegiate debut, becoming the first UTA freshman to start on opening weekend since Brad Vassar in 2015. Moffat, a native of Wichita Falls, Texas, worked 5.1 innings, allowing two hits and a first-inning run, walking one and striking out two. He worked two clean innings in his outing, inducing a pair of double plays to thwart scoring threats.
After a two-base error allowed a pair of runners into scoring position with one out in the sixth inning of a 1-0 game, UTA turned to righty Tristan Tom in relief. After a walk loaded the bases and set up a potential double-play ball, Tom fanned one and got a groundout to escape the jam.
UTA used lefty Ryan Buss to get two outs before righty Jordon West took over with a runner at third and one out in the top of the eighth. West allowed two hits and got an out before giving way to lefty Brad Vassar with two outs and a pair of runners on. Vassar retired all four hitters he faced with two strikeouts.
TAMU-CC starter Jackson Owens (0-0) worked six shutout innings, allowing three hits and two walks, striking out one. Chad Romero took over to start the seventh inning with a 1-0 lead and worked 2.1 innings, allowing a hit and three walks, striking out two. David Worrell came in with a 2-2 count and one out in the bottom of the ninth inning with the tying run in scoring position.
Worrell got a fly out and a pop out to escape the jam and earn the save.

UTA was limited to four hits in the game, getting singles from Easton Johnson, Will Olson, Christian Hollie and RJ Williams.

HOW THEY SCORED
Top first: The Islanders struck first, as Harrison Dinicola drew a one-out, full-count walk and moved to third on Nick Anderson's double. Dalton Stark then hung a sac fly to right-centerfield to score Dinicola.
Top eighth: Nick Anderson led off the eighth by getting plunked by a pitch. After a pair of balks and a pitching change, Enrique Sanchez Jr. scored Anderson with a sac fly to right.
Bottom ninth: UTA's last-ditch rally saw pinch hitter Boone Montgomery draw a walk and Phil Berthiaume followed with a one-out walk, with the pair taking an extra base on a wild pitch from Romero. With a 2-2 count and one out on pinch hitter Jakob Nunez, TAMU-CC called on Worrell in relief. Nunez hung a sac fly to rightfield to score Montgomery.
