HOW THEY SCORED
The Mavs struck first in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead on three singles. Salinas reached with a one-out single, lining a full-count offering up the middle. Hollie then ripped a single and after a strikeout for the second out, Olson lined a single into right-centerfield to score Salinas from second, his second two-out hit and two-out RBI of the year.
Wichita State immediately answered in the bottom of the first frame. After a pair of outs, Alec Bohm singled up the middle on a 2-1 offering, and after a second two-out single, Trey Vickers singled home Bohm with his first career hit.
The Mavs regained the lead in the second, getting a leadoff, full-count walk from Cook and an infield single from Minjarez, allowing Cook - who was off with the pitch - to motor to third to open the frame. Johnson then lined a 1-0 offering down the rightfield line for a sac fly, allowing Cook to score.
The Shockers answered with two outs in the bottom of the second, getting a double from Jordan Boyer and a single into left-centerfield from Travis Young, with Boyer just sliding in under the tag of Olson after a strong throw from Cook.
Vickers, in his second at-bat of the year, homered with two outs to leftfield to give Wichita State a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third.
Jacob Katzfey opened the bottom of the fourth inning with a hustle double into shallow right-centerfield, landing in no-man's land. After a single pushed runners to third, Boyer singled home Katzfey. Young's bunt single loaded the bases without an out for Greyson Jenista, who belted a 1-2 pitch off the foul pole down the leftfield line for a grand slam and an 8-2 lead. A four-pitch walk led to a RBI knock and a 9-2 lead for the Shockers in a six-run fourth inning.
UTA cut into the lead in the top of the sixth inning, as Vaughan ripped his third triple of the year, scoring on Olson's RBI groundout to the right side.
A two-run double from Dayton Dugas off the bench lifted the Shockers to an 11-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh, Wright State used a sac fly from Bohm to score Alex Jackson and take a 12-3 lead.
