HOW THEY SCORED
UTA scored in its first chance, getting a first-pitch leadoff single up the middle from Cook, who stole second base during RJ Williams' at-bat. After a wild pitch pushed Cook to third with one out, Will Olson hung a sac fly to centerfield to score Cook.
In the bottom of the first inning, Caleb Kyle led off with a full-count walk and Dalon Farkas singled through the left side. After a walk to Derek Scott loaded the bases, Riley Dunahue dropped a fly ball fielder's choice into shallow centerfield, with Johnson able to get the force out at second base but Kyle scoring from third. Robert Salazar followed with a ground ball chopped up the middle that allowed Farkas to score on the RBI groundout.
In the bottom of the second, ACU added to its lead, getting a leadoff single from Matt Munez, with Zack Mauser plunked by a one-out pitch to end Wernli's outing. Kyle greeted Gooch with an RBI single through the right side, just out of the reach of a diving Johnson at second base.
The Mavs answered in the top of the third inning, with Cook getting plunked by the first pitch of the frame, taking second on a passed ball. Olson then lined a two-hop single to the centerfielder, allowing Cook to score from second.
Robert Salazar led off the bottom of the third inning with a solo homer down the rightfield line, his first of the year. Collin Chaney kept the inning alive with a two-out single, scoring after Mauser doubled into the gap.
The Mavs rallied in the top of the fourth inning, getting a one-out runner on after a throwing error on a hard-hit ball up the middle from Renning. Johnson replaced Renning at first after a fielder's choice, scoring after Cook lined a double to the centerfield wall. Williams then lined his third homer of the year, putting it inside the foul pole down the rightfield line.
UTA took the lead in the top of the seventh inning, getting singles from Olson and Hollie and a walk from Vaughan to load the bases. After a pair of outs, Renning drew a full-count walk to force home Olson for a 6-5 UTA lead.
In the top of the eighth inning, UTA took a commanding lead. Cook ripped a double down the rightfield line to lead off and a Williams sacrifice bunt pushed him to third. After a walk to Olson, Hollie then scored Cook with an RBI groundout. Vaughan then pounded a two-run homer down the rightfield line, his seventh homer of the year. Nunez then doubled into the gap and Minjarez scored him with a single into rightfield. Minjarez then motored home after a triple from Renning, pounded off the wall in leftfield. Renning then scored on a wild pitch for a 12-5 lead.
A one-out walk, balk and wild pitch scored the sixth run for ACU in the eighth inning. Back-to-back extra-base hits and a wild pitch lifted ACU to three runs in the frame.
