BSB: Pitching Dominates Series Opener Setback

Box Score April 6, 2018

Box Score | Notes

LAFAYETTE, La. -- Louisiana's Colten Schmidt worked a sterling start to lead Louisiana to a 2-0 win over UTA baseball in the series opener of a three-game series, on Friday night in front of 4,715 at "Tigue" Moore Field.

UTA (14-14, 6-4 Sun Belt Conference) fell to the preseason favorite Louisiana (14-16, 4-6 Sun Belt) Ragin' Cajuns in a 2-0 pitching duel, allowing single runs in the fifth and eighth innings. UTA was handcuffed to three hits by Schmidt, who fanned a career-best 10.

LEADING THE MAVS
The Mavs were limited to doubles from Will Olson and Josh Minjarez, with Noah Vaughan owning a hit and David Renning adding a hit and walk. Olson went 2-for-3 with a hit by pitch.

ON THE MOUND
UTA starter Brad Vassar (2-3) worked his third quality start of the year, tossing 6.1 innings, allowing three hits and one run, walking two and striking out four. After a runner reached scoring position with one out in the seventh, Logan Austin came on to stand the runner at second base. Austin worked 1.2 innings, allowing an unearned run on two walks.

Schmidt (3-0) worked eight-shutout, three-hit innings, allowing a walk and striking out 10 over 107 pitches. He lowered his ERA to 1.26 before giving way to Logan Stoelke who earned the save in the ninth.

NEXT
The series will resume on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT at Tigue Moore Field. UTA will start senior righty Trae Patterson (2-1, 6.21 ERA) vs. Louisiana sophomore righty Jack Burk (2-4, 4.89 ERA).

HOW THEY SCORED
Louisiana took a lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, getting a leadoff walk to second after a sacrifice bunt. Johnathan Windham scored Zach LaFleur with an RBI single up the middle with two outs.

The Ragin' Cajuns plated a two-out insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning, loading the bases with two outs and scoring after a fielding error in the hole on the left side.
