LAFAYETTE, La. -- Louisiana plated the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning to post a 4-2 win over UTA baseball to clinch the three-game series, on Saturday night at "Tigue" Moore Field.
UTA (14-15, 6-5 Sun Belt Conference) fell behind after allowing a run in the first inning. UTA tied it in the top of the third and the fifth innings with single runs but Louisiana (14-16, 4-6 Sun Belt) answered with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth.
LEADING THE MAVS
Christian Hollie led the Mavs offensive attack with a three-hit game, including an RBI. Freshman David Renning belted his second homer of the year, adding a walk.
ON THE MOUND
UTA starter Trae Patterson worked four innings, allowing six hits and two runs, not issuing a walk and fanning three. Freshman David Moffat (3-5) took over to open the fifth inning, trailing by a run. Moffat worked the final four innings, allowing the decisive runs.
Louisiana starter Jack Burk worked 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, walking two and fanning two. In a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the sixth, Austin Perrin (2-4) came on in relief. Perrin was splendid, fanning a career-best six over the final 3.2 innings.
NEXT
The series will conclude on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT at "Tigue" Moore Field. UTA will start junior righty Ka'ikepono Anderson (0-1, 6.21 ERA) vs. Louisiana junior righty Nick Lee (1-3, 4.03 ERA).
HOW THEY SCORED
The Ragin' Cajuns struck in the bottom of the first inning, getting a one-out single to centerfield from Hayden Cantrelle, who took second on a hit and run. Hunter Kasuls followed with a two-out RBI single through the left side to score Cantrelle.
Renning led off the top of the third inning with his second homer of the year, a no-doubt laser shot out to leftfield, smashing branches on the trees beyond the fence.
The Cajuns answered in the fourth inning, getting a leadoff single to centerfield from Keenon Fontenot, who stole second and scored on a two-out hit from Tyler Stover into right-centerfield.
In the top of the sixth inning, Cook led off by getting plunked by a pitch. He motored to third on a single down the leftfield line from Olson with one out. Hollie then scored Cook with an RBI knock into right-centerfield.
Louisiana regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, getting a single and walk to put runners on the corners to open the frame. A strikeout, caught stealing double play allowed Gavin Bourgeois to score from third as UTA got the out on the runner attempting to take second following a strikeout to Fontenot.
In the seventh inning, the Cajuns added a run to take a 4-2 lead, getting a successful squeeze bunt down in a first-and-third, one-out situation.
