BSB: Mavs Outlast Cajuns in 10 Innings

LAFAYETTE, La. -- UTA baseball plated a run in the 10th inning and got three shutout relief innings from Daniel James to post a 4-2 win over Louisiana, on Sunday at "Tigue" Moore Field.

UTA (15-15, 7-5 Sun Belt Conference) and Louisiana Louisiana (15-17, 5-7 Sun Belt) traded single runs to take a 2-2 game into the 10th inning, with Josh Minjarez's solo homer tying the game in the fifth inning. UTA rallied with two in the 10th, with the game-winning run scoring on a sac fly from Omar Salinas. The win marks UTA's fifth extra-inning win in six chances in 2018.

LEADING THE MAVS
UTA collected eight hits and six walks in the win, getting two-hit games from Minjarez, Will Olson and Boone Montgomery. Montgomery drove in two RBI, with UTA also getting a hit and walk from Noah Vaughan and Christian Hollie.

ON THE MOUND
UTA starter Ka'ikepono Anderson worked three innings, allowing four hits and one run, walking one and striking out one. Dylan Schneider opened the fourth inning in relief, working three innings, allowing two hits and one run, not issuing and walk and striking out one.

Senior southpaw Ryan Buss opened the seventh inning, allowing a pair of hits and getting an out. Andrew Gross took over for Buss with an out in the seventh, escaping a bases-loaded, two-out jam. Senior Daniel James (1-3) opened the bottom of the eighth inning and earned the win after hurling three shutout innings in relief. He allowed a single, two walks and struck out four.

Louisiana starter Nick Lee worked 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and two runs, walking three and striking out one. Brock Batty came on in the fifth inning and worked 2.1 innings, allowing a hit and two walks, fanning two.

Logan Stoelke came on in relief after a pair of leadoff runners reached scoring position in the eighth, wiggling out of the jam without any damage. All-America righty Dylan Moore opened the 10th inning after Stoelke worked two shutout innings. Moore allowed a pair of runners to reach to open the inning before turning to lefty Grant Cox, who finished off a 2-0 at-bat to issue a bases-loaded walk. Cox got two outs and walked a pair before Brett Williams came on in a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the 10th.

The Mavs wrap up their road trip on Tuesday, traveling across town to face TCU at 6:30 p.m. CT.

HOW THEY SCORED
Vaughan opened the top of the second with his sixth triple of the year, dropped into the left-centerfield gap. Montgomery then lined a 1-2 pitch through the right side to score Vaughan and give the Mavs a 1-0 lead.

The Cajuns evened it up in the bottom of the third, getting a one-out triple from Hunter Kasuls, scoring on an RBI groundout from Kennon Fontenot.

Louisiana took the lead in the fourth inning, getting a one-out single from Kole McKinnon. Daniel Lahare followed with a run-scoring double into the left-centerfield gap.

Minjarez belted his second homer of the year with two outs in the fifth inning to tie the game.

In the top of the 10th inning UTA got Minjarez on after a hit by pitch, with Olson following with a full-count walk. After a pitching change in a 2-0 count, Hollie drew a walk to load the bases for Salinas. Salinas lined a 2-2 offering into centerfield to score Minjarez for a 3-2 UTA lead. After the second out, UTA plated a run on a bases-loaded fielder's choice on a throwing error up the middle.
