Box Score ARLINGTON, Texas -- Texas State used three multiple-run innings to post an 8-2 win over UTA baseball in the regular-season finale, on Saturday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
UTA (21-33, 11-19 Sun Belt Conference) concluded its regular-season schedule with Texas State (28-26-1, 16-14 Sun Belt) as the Bobcats completed the three-game sweep with wins on Thursday and Friday. The Bobcats scored two in each the first and second and plated three unearned runs in the seventh.
The game marked a chance to honor UTA's 13-man senior class on Saturday, including position starters RJ Williams, Christian Hollie, Omar Salinas, Phil Berthiaume and Easton Johnson. Pitchers Jordon West, Jake Wilcox, Trae Patterson, Adam Meyer, Ryan Buss, Jud Kinzy, Daniel James and Brad Vassar round out the senior class.
LEADING THE MAVS
UTA got a three-hit game from Williams, with UTA also getting a hit and RBI from Will Olson. Salinas, Johnson and Noah Vaughan each added knocks. Josh Minjarez went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
ON THE MOUND
UTA starter Reid Petty (1-4) worked 1.2 innings, allowing five hits and four runs, walking one and striking out three. West came on in relief in the second inning and worked 5.1 innings, allowing four hits and three unearned runs, not issuing a walk and striking out six. Tristan Tom and Dylan Schneider worked the eighth. Buss and Drew Gooch worked the ninth inning.
Texas State starter Zachary Leigh (3-3) worked 5.2 innings, allowing six hits and one run, striking out one. The Bobcats also used Brayden Theriot and Alex Klitsas in relief.
NEXT
UTA will open the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Tuesday, facing a foe to be determined.
HOW THEY SCORED
Texas State opened the scoring with two runs on three hits in the first inning. Dalton Shuffield led off with a bunt single and Jonathan Ortega followed with a single to rightfield. After a double steal, Jaylen Hubbard doubled home the pair with a ball into the right-centerfield corner.
The Bobcats added two runs on two hits and a walk in the top of the second inning, getting a run on a wild pitch and an RBI hit from Ortega.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Williams led off with a double off the base of the wall in rightfield. Olson then ripped a 1-0 offering down the rightfield line to score Williams.
Three unearned runs scored for the Bobcats in the top of the 10th inning, including a pair on a two-run triple from Luke Sherley.
A bunt single forced in the eighth run for the Bobcats in the ninth.
A hit from Vaughan and a hit by pitch on Hollie set up an RBI single for Minjarez in the bottom of the ninth.
