May 23, 2018 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - A campaign that saw junior Guanarteme Nuez reach the NCAA Singles Championship came to an end on Wednesday evening against No. 7-seed Borna Gojo from Wake Forest.
Nuez finished the 2017-18 season with a 25-7 record after going out with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4 match that saw itself tied midway through both sets. Nuez, the SBC Player of the Year, entered the 64-person tournament as the No. 98-ranked player in the final ITA/Oracle Rankings and earned the league's automatic selection to the tournament
"It was a tremendous year for Teme, despite today's loss, this one will be remember at UTA for a long time," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "He had a great junior year in helping lead a young squad and we are excited for what is to come in his story as he leads us in his senior season. The best is yet to come for him for sure, and we are proud of the way he represented our University and the Sun Belt Conference."
With the match locked at 3-3 in the first set, Nuez had an opportunity to earn a break as he led with Gojo on serve, taking the first three points. However, the Wake Forest opponent stormed back to take the game and the opening set. A rain delay slowed momentum in the second set, once again tied at 3-3. Nuez battled in a pair of close games but couldn't pick up the crucial break point needed to tie the match.
Nuez was UTA's fourth player or team to reach the NCAA tournament in the last four years. UTA has sent two doubles squads into the field, while also earning a team selection in 2016 after winning the Sun Belt Conference.
