Box Score LAFAYETTE, La. – Georgia Southern's Seth Shuman fired a complete-game win to push the Eagles to a 3-1 win over UTA baseball in the third round of the the 2018 Sun Belt Conference Championships, on Thursday afternoon at Louisiana's M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field, ending UTA's 2018 season.
UTA (22-35) saw its three-game run in the postseason come to a conclusion as Georgia Southern (30-25) scored the last three runs of the game to post the two-run win, getting the game-winning tallies with a two-strike, two-out, two-run single in the seventh.
The Mavs opened the Sun Belt Championships on Tuesday with an elimination game win over Arkansas State before suffering a setback on Wednesday vs. No. 15 Coastal Carolina, the top-seeded team in the field.
LEADING THE MAVS
Josh Minjarez led the Mavs with a 2-for-3 game, ripping his 11th double of the year. UTA also got a hit from Christian Hollie and a suicide squeeze bunt for an RBI from Easton Johnson.
ON THE MOUND
UTA starter Trae Patterson worked six strong innings in his seventh quality start of the year and 18th of his career. He scattered nine hits and allowed just a run, not issuing a walk and striking out six. He stranded five Eagles runners on 84 pitches.
In a 1-1 game to open the bottom of the seventh inning, Logan Austin (4-1) came on in relief. Austin worked one complete inning, allowing two hits and two runs, walking one. Daniel James worked the eighth.
Georgia Southern starter Seth Shuman (7-5) worked nine complete innings, allowing just three hits and striking out six.
HOW THEY SCORED
The Mavs opened the scoring in the top of the third inning, getting a leadoff double from Minjarez, laced into the left-centerfield gap and skidding out of the sliding glove of Georgia Southern centerfielder Nolan Tressler. After a productive out from Aaron Funk pushed Minjarez to third with one out, Easton Johnson laid down a successful suicide squeeze to put the Mavs on the board, 1-0.
The Eagles answered in the bottom of the third inning, getting four singles to even it at 1-1. Austin Thompson's RBI into leftfield scored Jason Swan, who reached on a single.
Georgia Southern took the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, getting a two-run single from Mitchell Golden, lined up the middle with two outs.
