LAFAYETTE, La. - Tied for the most in the Sun Belt Conference, UT Arlington was honored with four selections to the league's all-conference teams, announced on Tuesday by the league office ahead of this week's postseason tournament hosted by the University of Louisiana.
Junior outfielder Laura Curry and sophomore catcher Reagan Wright were named to the All-SBC First Team, while senior second baseman Sandra Mendoza and freshman pitcher Randi Phillips earned spots on the All-SBC Second Team. Mendoza's selection is her third all-conference honor, while Wright, Curry and Phillips all earned their first all-conference nomination.
"It is great to see these deserving players get recognized by the coaches in the league for what they have accomplished on the field this season," UTA coach Peejay Brun said. "Sandra is a player that is well respected in the league and it is exciting to see the competitiveness and leadership recognized for what she brings at her position. For Laura, Randi and Reagan, it is really amazing to see how they have really improved and put in such hard work into their games. It is always great to see people get recognized in knowing all of the work that they put into it."
Curry paced the offense to lead with a .361 batting average and a .430 on-base percentage, knocking 43 base hits in the regular season with two doubles, a triple and two home runs. Curry was second on the team with 16 stolen bases. She lifted her average up to .392 in SBC games.
Wright finished second int he league with 12 home runs, 10 coming in the month of April, and had a mind blistering .634 slugging percentage. Her 49 RBI are a new program single-season record as she hit .328 in the campaign.
Mendoza closed the regular season at the top of many of the UTA offensive all-time records and will go down in the top five in hits, runs, RBI, extra-base hits and batting average. She hit .290 in her senior season, adding a team-high 33 runs scored. Mendoza combined with the infield to be a part of a squad that is one double play shy of tying the team record of 31 set last year and a mark that is sixth in the nation in double plays turned per game.
Joining UTA just prior to the season, Phillips has been a work horse for the pitching staff and closed with a 15-10 record and 3.28 ERA. Phillips picked up wins over No. 22 Louisiana and now ranked Oklahoma State, while being in the top 10 in the nation with five saves, most recently a three-inning save over No. 23 Texas State. Her 41 appearances are a team high, while she leads the staff with 86 strike outs.
