ARLINGTON, Texas - The men's and women's tennis teams will get their fall schedules going on Sept. 14 when both compete at the Midland Invitational to kick off the tournament season as coach
Diego Benitez announced the slate on Friday.
The Mavericks have four tournaments listed on the schedule for each team, with the addition of future tournaments possible throughout the fall. Both teams compete in the tough ITA Texas Region filled with opportunity to prepare itself for the spring dual match play campaign.
"We always look forward to a tough schedule during the fall that can test us individually and prepare us for team competition," UTA coach
Diego Benitez said. "I am looking forward to seeing what we can produce on the court and how we can build on what was a great season last year. We have a lot of young student-athletes that are looking forward to competing as Mavericks for us and I am excited to return to the court with this bunch."
With both teams competing in the Midland Invitational over the course of Sept. 14 through Sept. 16, the women's will continue their schedule with three tournaments all in the state of Texas. UTA returns to tournaments that it has had success in during years past with action at the Rice Invitational on Sept. 21-23 before a trip down I-30 to take on foes at the SMU Invitational on Oct. 5-7. The schedule culminates at the ITA Texas Regionals hosted by Texas A&M on Oct. 18-22, with qualifiers advancing to the national tournament in November.Â
The men's schedule will head west to the Oracle ITA/Masters tournament in Malibu, Calif. on Sept. 20-23 before a trip to the prestigious ITA All-American hosted in Tulsa, Okla. Individuals battle through a tough qualification bracket to reach the main draw that takes place over Sept. 29 through Oct. 4.
Guanarteme Nuez, a select in the 2018 NCAA Singles Championship, is looking to make another run through the field.Â
The Mavs will turn to the spring season in early February with the 2019 season being the first in which the Sun Belt will play a traditional schedule against one another. Information about the spring opponents will be released later in the fall.
"We are looking forward to having a balanced schedule this year with our Sun Belt opponents," Benitez said. "It will be a good test for the league in getting to see our opponents prior to conference tournament, unlike previous seasons where we may have just faced off against a few of them during the season."
