Women's Tennis wins thriller with UTSA

ARLINGTON, TexasUT Arlington women's tennis bounced back after a tough loss to Arkansas State, capping off its weekend with a 4-3 nail-biter of a victory over the UTSA Roadrunners. The match was a dead heat, coming down to the very last singles match on Court 6 to decide it.

The fateful Court 6 bout pitted UTA's Flora Farkaslaki against UTSA's Laia Tarazona Peyro. Tarazona Peyro handed Farkaslaki a convincing 6-1 loss in the first set, but the UTA freshman responded well in the second with a 6-4 victory.

That set up a winner-take-all third set between the pair. Upping the ante, UTSA's Aoka Nagasawa defeated Natalia Gonzalez on Court 4, tying the match at 3-3 and leaving the Court 6 tilt centerstage.

Tarazona Peyro and Farkaslaki went back-and-forth and the set at one point was tied at five games apiece. With the matchup in its final stages, Farkaslaki didn't blink, taking the next two games to clinch the set, Court 6 and the match for UTA (5-12).

Farkaslaki's win paid off what was a hard-fought, strong effort throughout the day for the Mavericks. UTA got off on the right foot, winning doubles for the fourth time of the spring.

The doubles point was also hotly contested. Nagasawa and Akari Tomoyose won on Court 3, immediately putting UTSA (8-9) ahead. Elizaveta Mladentseva and Sofia Selle, however, picked up a 6-3 win on Court 1. Gonzalez and Tasnime Ahamout then narrowly knocked off the Roadrunners duo of Milica Milosavljevic and Valeria Sanchez 7-5, winning the point for the Mavericks.

Mladentseva was also victorious in her singles bout on Court 1. The graduate student dropped the first set to UTSA's Celine Absawi 6-3, but bounced back to win the next two 6-3 and 6-2.

Selle was the third Maverick to win her singles match. The freshman won her Court 2 tilt in straight sets.

UTA will be back in action at 2 p.m. Wednesday against the Abilene Christian Wildcats at the John T.L. Jones Tennis Building in Abilene. The Mavericks won the first bout between the two 5-2 on March 20 in Arlington.
