MALIBU, Calif. - Looking to replicate a 2017-18 campaign that saw a Sun Belt Player of the Year award and trip to the NCAA Singles Championship, Guanarteme Nuez begins his senior campaign at the prestigious 2018 Oracle ITA Masters hosted by Pepperdine University at the Malibu Racquet Club on Thursday.Â
Entering ranked No. 56 in the preseason Oracle/ITA Division I Men's Rankings, Nuez is the first Maverick player in program history to be selected to the 32-person tournament that kicks off the ITA calendar of tournaments this fall. Nuez is the highest ranked individual in the Sun Belt, ahead of No. 83 Loic Cloes and No. 122 Clement Marzol from South Alabama.
"It is an honor for Teme to be a part of this tournament and now it is time for him to show the level of play that he can compete at," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "This is a very tough field, but he has experience against playing against some of the best in the nation, including going into a battle against one of the national finalists last year in the NCAA Tournament. This tournament is one of the best in the fall schedule, and we are looking forward to see how we match up."
The single-elimination bracket, releasing on Thursday afternoon, features automatic selections from each conference, as well as top-ranked individuals from the preseason rankings. Individuals that fall in the opening round will be able to compete in a single-elimination consolation bracket. The tournament is scheduled to concluded on Sept. 23.Â
A four-time Sun Belt Player of the Week honoree in his junior season, Nuez was 25-7 in singles with two wins over top-ranked players, including a top-10 win over an individual from Columbia. Nuez went toe-to-toe with a national finalist in the NCAA Tournament from the host Wake Forest, and was selected to the SBC All-Conference first team.Â
