WACO – The UT Arlington softball team capped an already impressive tournament showing by beating Sam Houston State to become the Getterman Classic champion Sunday, 3-0.
Â
The win came a day after UTA (5-5) swept a doubleheader against #16 Baylor to advance to the championship game.
Â
Mavericks' leadoff batter
Whitney Walton went 2-for-4 at the plate to cap a tournament where she hit .529 over five games with four runs and an RBI.
Â
Walton was one of four UTA All-Tournament selections, along with
Brittany Wyllie,
Reagan Wright and
Krista Rude.
Â
Wyllie finished the tournament with a .333 batting average and three RBI. Wright hit.500, drove in three runs and scored three runs of her own. Rude hit .319 with six runs and two RBI.
Â
In the title game,
Randi Phillips picked up her second complete-game win in as many days, scattering six hits and striking out two in the shutout victory.
Â
The win over Sam Houston State (4-6) was a pitcher's duel until the Mavs broke through in the top of the 5th inning with four two-out hits.
Â
Bri Burchianti started the rally with a single to left center. Walton moved Burchianti over to second with a bunt. With runners on first and second, Rude singled to center field to score Burchianti.
Â
In the next at-bat,
Laura Curry hit a triple to center field to bring Rude and Walton home.
Â
Sam Houston threatened with a pair of two-out hits in the bottom of the 7th, but Phillips forced a groundout to end the game.
