Mavs Win Sunday Thriller Over ACU

ARLINGTON - Randi Phillips pitched five scoreless innings of relief for UTA, leading them to a very close 2-1 victory over Abilene Christian.
Phillips struck out two batters and gave up no walks and two hits in her winning outing.

"Games like this, it's just gonna come down to where the hits fall," UTA Head Coach, Peejay Brun said. "It becomes one of those matches, you know, who's gonna get the timely hits?"

Abilene struck first as shortstop, Kaitlyn Huseman scored on an erred throw to first-base by UTA shortstop, Whitney Walton. A blooper hit to short forced a quick throw to first, as Huseman went from first to home after the throw missed its mark.

Two innings later UTA center fielder Laura Curry connected on a deep ball to center field to lead off the inning with a triple. She would even things up with the next batter as she scored on a sacrifice bunt from first-baseman, Aileen Garcia to tie the game 1-1 in the fourth inning.

Curry finished two-for-three on the day with a triple and the one run scored.

Brun said it was good for the team to show they can come from behind.

"Being able to come from behind and pull it off is going to give us some needed confidence going into this week," Brun said.

In the top of the seventh, Garcia got to first base before being replaced by pinch-runner Kayci Moore.  A sacrifice bunt pushed Moore to third before she scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly from third-baseman, Brittany Wyllie to give UTA a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning.
