Lady Mavs Host South Alabama On Thursday

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Lady Mavs will look to pick up their ninth win in the last 10 games on Thursday night, when they host the Jaguars of South Alabama at the College Park Center. Tip-off for the Sun Belt Conference showdown is set for 7:00 p.m.

UTA is 7-4 all-time vs. South Alabama. The first meeting was on Nov. 21, 1999, with the Lady Mavs picking up a 73-61 win. Since joining the Sun Belt, UTA owns a 6-4 record against the Jaguars

KNOW YOUR OPPONENT | SOUTH ALABAMA
South Alabama is coming off of a 66-58 loss at Troy (Feb. 23). The Jags sit in fifth place in the Sun Belt standings entering play on Thursday night, and have the fourth best scoring offense in the Sun Belt at 70.0 points per game. The Jags are shooting .430 from the floor and .350 from behind the arc. USA paces the league in FG percentage defense (.351) and three-point FG percentage defense (.266).

Savannah Jones leads the Jags with 15.5 points per game, and is knocking down 44.9 percent of her 3-point attempts, which rank first in the league and 8th in the nation in the category.

20 DUBS
UTA's 60-56 OT win at ULM on Saturday, Feb. 23 secured the squad's 20th win of the season and made the Lady Mavs the first Sun Belt team to hit the 20-win plateau.

The Feb. 23rd win also gave the Lady Mavericks the 10th 20-win season in program history and the 2nd of Coach Gerlich's UTA tenure.

COLLEGEINSIDER.COM MID-MAJOR POLL
The UTA women's basketball team received 14 votes in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 Poll that was released on Tuesday, Feb. 26.

This marks the fifth straight week that the Lady Mavericks have received votes in the Mid-Major Poll. UTA is one of three Sun Belt Conference schools to appear in the Mid-Major Poll along with Troy (RV, 10) and Little Rock (RV; 7).

Gonzaga moved into the top spot in the poll with 17 first-place votes and 746 points, while South Dakota State moved up two spots into the No. 2 position. FGCU (723 points), South Dakota (671 points) and Drake (639 points) rounded out the top-five.

STATS ON STATS ON STATS
UTA does it on both ends of the court, ranking as one of the top-3 offensive and defensive teams in the Sun Belt Conference. The Lady Mavs average 73.2 points per game and hold opponents to just 60.4 points per contest, to rank third and second in the league, respectively.

In 26 games this season, the Lady Mavericks have held 11 opponents below 60 points.

In the national rankings, UTA ranks No. 6 in three-point field goal percentage (.389) and rank in the Top-20 nationally in assists per game (15th) and field goal percentage (18th).

LAST TIME OUT | UTA AT ULM (FEB 23)
The UTA women's basketball team fought through a cold shooting night to post a 60-56 overtime win over ULM on Saturday afternoon at the Fant-Ewing Coliseum and took over first place in the Sun Belt Conference standings in the process.

Claire Chastain led the Lady Mavs with a game-high 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the floor and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. The freshman also added a game-high 11 boards to register her first collegiate double-double. Cierra Johnson recorded her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Laurynn McGowen and Terryn Milton added nine points and three boards each, while Katie Ferrell chipped in with six points, six rebounds and a game-high four assists.

UTA picked up the overtime victory despite shooting just 36.4 percent (20-of-55) from the floor and 20 percent (2-of-10) from long distance. The Warhawks knocked down 20-of-54 shots (37 percent) and were outrebounded by the Lady Mavs 47-29.

The Lady Mavs got big contributions from Chastain and McGowen at the end of regulation and overtime to secure the win. Chastain scored a tough layup to tie the game (51-51) with 32 seconds left in regulation and she knocked down a jumper to give UTA a 2-point lead with 33 seconds left in the OT. McGowen scored five points in the overtime period, including three free-throws in the last 18 seconds to put the game out of reach.

Cierra Johnson was named College Sports Madness Sun Belt Player of the Week on Monday, Feb. 11. The award marked the third Player of the Week honor for C. Johnson this season (2 College Sports Madness, 1 Sun Belt Conference).
